ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Wednesday, the 28th Day of September, 1921. Ordered, "That Standing Order No. 219 be suspended, and that a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of fifteen members, to consider all matters relating to school-teachers, education, and public instruction generally, publicschool training of teachers, higher education, technical education, manual instruction, and such other matters affecting education as may be referred to it; to have power to call for persons and papers ; three to be a quorum: the Committee to consist of Mr. Atmore, Mr. Bitchener, Mr. E. Dixon, Mr. Fraser, the Hon. Mr. Hanan, Sir J. P. Luke, Mr. Malcolm, Mr. Masters, Mr. McNicol, Mr. Nash, Mr. Poland, Mr. Potter, Mr. Sidey, Mr. Wright, and the mover."— (Hon. Mr. Parr.) Tuesday, the 11th Day of October, 1921. Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1920 and the short session of 1921 be again referred to the same Committees as they"were"referred"to during"the said sessions.—(Right Hon. REPORTS. No. 155.—Petition of Phcebe Myers, of Wellington. Praying for legislation to enable her to obtain a retiring-allowance under section 12 of the Public Service Classification and Superannuation Act, 1908. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 3rd November, 1921.
No. 199.—Petition of Hugh McLean Urquhart and 2 Others, of Ashburton. Praying that Hugh McLean Urquhart and two others be compensated for hardship and monetary loss suffered in connection with an injury as the result of an explosion which took place during an experiment in a chemistry class at the Ashburton High School. I have the honour to report that the Committee is of the opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration of the following recommendation : — (1.) That a compassionate allowance of £210 be granted, the said amount to be expended as follows : Payment of doctors' fees disbursed by father of petitioner, £45 ; payment of legal expenses disbursed by aunt of petitioner, £65 ; to be administered by Education Department for the benefit of petitioner, £100. (2.) That the Education Department be empowered to grant the petitioner two years' further tuition in a secondary school. 14th December, 1921. (Referred back to Committee for further consideration.)
Education Amendment Bill. The Education Committee, to which was referred the above-mentioned Bill, has the honour to report that it has carefully considered same, and recommends that it be allowed to proceed with amendments as shown on copy of the Bill attached. 25th November, 1921.
