No. 157/20. —Petition of Wieemu Hohbpa and 21 others. Praying that the Oraukura Block be not purchased by the Crown until the same has been partitioned. I am directed to report that, as a matter of policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 2nd February, 1922.

Final Report. T have the honour to report that the Native Affairs Committee held its final meeting on Thursday, the 2nd day of February, 1922. During the session the Committee met on 44 occasions, with an average attendance of 8. Including 77 petitions brought forward from the session of 1920, and 11 from the first session of 1921, the Committee had before it 173 petitions. Of these petitions 112 were considered and reported upon, and the remaining 61 are held over until next session. With regard to 28 petitions the Committee recommended that they be referred to the Government as follows : 4 for favourable consideration, 16 for inquiry, and 8 for consideration. With regard to 2 petitions the Committee recommended that they be referred to the Hon. the Native Minister. Upon 64 petitions the Committee had no recommendation to make, and 18 petitions were withdrawn. The Native Trustee Amendment Bill, the Native Land Amendment Bill, Part IX and the definition clauses relating thereto of the Samoa Bill, the Cook Islands Amendment Bill, Part VI of the Forests Bill, the Native Land Amendment and Native Land Claims Adjustment Bill, and the Urewera Lands Bill were referred to the Committee, and were duly considered and reported upon. One parliamentary paper of the first session of 1921, and 11 of this session, were referred to the. Committee, and were duly considered and reported upon. I have the honour to report that at a meeting of the Native Affairs Committee held on Thursday, the 2nd February, 1922, the following resolution was unanimously carried : — " That the Committee desires to place upon record its high appreciation of the able and courteous manner in which the Chairman, Mr. J. A. Young, has conducted the affairs of the Committee, and that this resolution be recorded in the minutes and reported to the House." 2nd February, 1922,
