Return of Non-fatal Accidents in connection with Machinery during the Financial Year ended the 31st March, 1916.

Ashburton Borough Council, Ashburton Gas-engine Reginald C. Price ; 34 years .. 5th April, 1915 ; leg injured Compressed air was used for starting, and while doing so some got back into the expansion-chamber. By some means the valve had not closed properly, and the charge igniting in the chamber burst the end off it and blew up the footplate on which Price was standing, bruising his right leg at hip, knee, and ankle. While working at machine the middle finger of Williamson's right hand got caught in machine. A piece of blade of the machine broke off and struck Colling on the nose, bruising it. When feeding the machine Town allowed his left hand to be drawn into the rollers and got it crushed. A piece of wood flew off the timber Hatchard was working, and injured his eye. j§j In trj-ing to pack the saw while in motion Burke's hand and arm came in contact with it, causing loss of his index finger of right hand and injury to left arm. Blick's left hand came into contact with the shaping-rollers. The index and little fingers were nipped between recesses and delivery-plate. While operating the machine Bromley's forefinger of his right hand got crushed between the drivers. In relacing small sawdust-belt while machinery was in motion Brown's foot was caught in the bight of it. It drew him on to the shaft, breaking his leg. which had to be amputated above the knee. While working at the wheel Fitzpatrick's first finger of his left hand came into contact with it and was cut. Woodbury's second finger of left hand was caught in the cogs and was crushed. The nail on Bell's first finger of his right hand came into contact with the stone and was taken off. When wiping clown the radial arm with a piece of waste, Jordan's hand was caught in the gearing, crushing his fingers. Carr got the thumb of left hand under the die, taking the tip of it off. Jones's hand was caught between part of machine frame and cog-wheel. His hand and finger were cut and bruised. Hull was applying dressing to the pulley when his left arm was caught between the belt and the pulley. It w-as dislocated in two places, and the forearm and WTist were broken. Henry's left hand got under the mortise-cutter and was badly lacerated. The piece of timber Gregg was working jumped out of his right hand, causing his hand to come into contact with the knives, of the machine, resulting in injury to third finger. i A. and T.
