# No. 118, Session ll.—Petition of Messrs. Noswohthy Bros., of Waitare (and 10 other similar Petitions as per Schedule attached). Petitioners pray for an inquiry into the methods of the Press Association. I am directed to report that, as the representation of the petitioners indicates that the New Zealand Press Association is a close corporation, and that the terms of membership are prohibitory to small newspapers, the Committee is of opinion that the complaint of the petitioners should be investigated, and recommends that the general methods of the agency should be referred to a Select Committee of the House for investigation and report. 23rd October, 1906. I am directed to report that, as no evidence exists to confirm the statement of the petitioner that he ever had a contract to supply the Hauhau prisoners with food, &c, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 23rd October, 1906. No. 280, Session ll.—Petition of J. J. Stephenson (late Assistant Magazine-keeper), Auckland. Petitioner prays for a pension for services rendered in the Defence Department. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make in respect to this petition. 23rd October, 1906. No. 302, Session ll.—Petition of William Peck, of Waione. Petitioner prays for compensation for injuries received whilst assisting the police in the execution of their duty. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that, in addition to the sum of £55 which has been offered to Mr. Peck by the Police Department, a further sum of £55 should be given him, and recommends the Government to compensate the petitioner with a total sum of £110. 23rd October, 1906. No. 456, Session ll.—Petition of Opaheke Road Board, of Opaheke Road District. Petitioners pray for a grant of £500 for metalling the Ararimu Main Road. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that the Government should make a "rant on a pound-for-pound basis, and therefore recommends the petition to the Government for consideration. 23rd October, 1906.
