EDUCATION: ALLOCATION OF VOTES FOR SCHOOL BUILDINGS.
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 6th October, 1899. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the allocation between the several Education Boards of the colony of the sums of £25,400 and £25,000 voted in the session of 1898 for school-building purposes; such return to set forth the amount paid to each Board, the amount applied for, and the purposes, in detail, to which the Boards proposed that the money should be applied."—(Mr. Cabson.)
Thebe were two votes, each of £25,000, passed in the session of 1898 for school-building purposes — viz., Vote No. 62, Consolidated Fund, and Vote No. 102, Public Works Fund. As it is not clear which of these votes is referred to in the order, the distribution of both votes is shown in the following return.
Vote No. 62 (Consolidated Fund), and Vote No. 101 (Public Works Fund), £25,400. ■ —Only £20,000 of the latter sum was voted for school-buildings, the balance (£5,400) being set apart for special purposes, as shown in the appropriations. Of the £45,000 available for distribution, £43,350 was distributed to Education Boards on a population basis, £450 was granted for special purposes, and the balance, £1,200, was expended on Native-school buildings. „, .. • t, , Amount distributed on Education Board.
