The agitation which prevailed some months ago about the insanitary condition of some of the old portions of this building seems to have died away. At any rate, at my last visit, I found wards No. 1 and No. 2 quite fresh and well ventilated. The new nurses' home will, I hope, soon be put in hand, and the nursing system, which has for long been the weak spot of this hospital, will then be reorganized and improved. The Akaroa hospital is managed as a branch of this institution. * Details of wines, spirits, &o.: Brandy, £34 13s. 7d.; whiskey, £20 ; gin, £3 15s. ; port wine, £99 Bs. 9d. ; claret, £1 10s.; champagne, £51 14s. 7d.; bottled ale and stout (English), £13 15s. 3d.; ditto (colonial), £26 6s ; mineralwaters, £38 18s.: total, £290 Is. 2d. This expenditure dates from 10th December, 1891.
