1889. NEW ZEALAND.

EDUCATION: THE UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO. [In Continuation of E.-6, 1888.]

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.

The Chancelloe to His Excellency the Goveenob. Sir— "University of Otago, 30th April, 1889. In compliance with the provisions of " The Otago University Ordinance, 1869," I have the honour to forward to your Excellency the following report of the proceedings of the University for the year ending the 31st March, 1889 : — The session commenced on the Ist May, and was attended by 184 students, of whom 130 have matriculated. Mason, Isabella McLandress, Joseph Moss, A. E. A. Palmer, W. Riddell, and R. G. Whetter. B.Sc. Degeee.—F. B. Allen, M.A. Bacheloe of Laws.—T. K. Sidey. The names of the following are recorded as having passed the first section of the B.A. degree: J. A. Fullarton, J. M. E. Garrow, W. B. Graham, J. 11. Henderson, J. A. McNickle, J. Moir, C. M. Mouat, J. R. Pollock, A. S. M. Poison, J. S. Reid, Frances J. Ross, J. Smythe, G. L. Stewart, J. Tennent, J. B. Thomson, Kate Walker, James Watt, and W. Watters. Scholaeships.—A senior scholarship has been awarded to J. M. Beattie. Three junior scholarships have also been awarded, making nine junior scholarhips held from the New Zealand University, and nine students hold local scholarships. The Council reports, with deep regret, the loss which the University and the community have sustained through the death of Professor M. Brow T n, while exploring a section of the west coast of Otago. The most active efforts were put forth, aided by the Government, for the recovery of his remains, but without success. It was found that he bequeathed to the University, which he loyally served, his library and one hundred pounds for the purchase of hooks.
