The Council has pleasure in stating that the Church Trustees and the Presbyterian Synod secured, with commendable promptitude, the services for the session of Mr. Halket Dawson, M.A., formerly assistant to Professor Bain, of Aberdeen, and Rector of Timaru High School, as Professor of English and Lecturer on Political Economy ; and of Mr. J. W. Salmond, M.A., formerly a distinguished student of the University, as Lecturer on Constitutional History; and also, that the Church Trustees have invited applications for the vacant chair of English language and literature in the newspapers of Australia and the Home-country. The Council accepted the resignation, with great regret, of Dr. William Brown of the lectureship on surgery, which he filled for nine years to its entire satisfaction. It reports the election of Dr. Maunsell, who is well known as an able surgeon, as his successor. The University loses the valable services of Dr. King, Lecturer on Mental Diseases, owing to his transference to Wellington. The Council will proceed without delay to fill the vacant post. The Council has been fortunate in obtaining the services of Dr. de Zouche, of Dunedin, as Lecturer on the Diseases of Children. The following lecturers have been reappointed for a further term, namely: Dr. Roberts on pathology, and Dr. Ogston on medical jurisprudence and public health; and Messrs. G. J. Binns on general geology, Walter Cutten on applied mechanics, and L. 0. Beal, jun., on mine and land surveying. The Council regrets that it was constrained to make a further reduction for another year on the rent of the Barewood Run, but trusts that the better times which have set in will bring needed relief to its tenants. The abstract of the accounts, showing the income and expenditure of the University for the year ending the 31st March, 1889, is now in the hands of the Auditor-General. I have, &c, D. M. Stuaet, D.D., His Excellency the Earl of Onslow, G.C.M.G., &c, Chancellor. Governor of New Zealand.
