The Select Committee of the House of Representatives, appointed June sth, 1856, to consider the hest means of forming and establishing a Library, having considered the matter referred to them, report as follows :— They recommend to the House, that the two rooms fronting Street in the building about to be purchased for the use of the Assembly, be appropriated for the purpose of a Library andßeading*-room. Tour Committee, assuming that it would be advantageous, that the Library formed by the Provincial Council of Auckland, should be joined to that of the General Assembly, placed themselves in communication with the members of that body, through their Speaker, and have the satisfaction of informing the House, that they have consented to unite their Library to that proposed to be formed by the General Assembly, and to provide an equal annual vote for the purpose of adding to the books, and at their own expense to provide fittings, &c., and pay the salary of the Librarian. Your Committee, recommend that His Excellency be requested to place the sum of £100 upon the estimates for the purchase of Books &c., during the current year. A list of the Books &c., proposed to be purchased is in the hands of the honorable the Speaker. Your Committee would suggest that an application be made to the Government to supply the Library with a copy of the maps of the various Provinces now in the Survey Office at Auckland. Your Committee would further recommend, that the honorable: the Chairman of Committee should have full power during the recess, to manage the Library on the part of the House, in connection with the persons authorised in the like behalf by the Legislative Council and the Provincial Council of Auckland, and that he should be requested to instruct the Librarian to cause the words "General Assembly, New Zealand," to be printed on the back of all books, and stamped on all papers procured for the use of the Library from the funds supplied by the Assembly. \ our Committee, have the satisfaction ot adding, that the steps they have taken have been fully concurred in by the Committee of the Legislative Council appointed with the same objects as your Committee.
