' Ordered, "That all petitions not finally dealt with durmg the session of 1940 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session. (Right Hon. Mr. Fraseb.)
REPORTS.
Special Report re late Captain W. J. Lyon, M.P. I have the honour to report that at the first meeting this session, held on the 17th July, the Defence Committee unanimously passed the following resolution WT " That this Committee desires to place on record its regret at the death of the late Captain W.J. Lvon MP killed in action, who was Chairman of the Committee from 1937 onwards. The Committee desires also to express its sympathy with the family of the late Captain Lyon m the loss they have sustained ; and it directs that this resolution be reported to the House. 22nd July, 1941.
No. 16—Petition of Cecilia E. Astwood, of Napier. Praying that her son, Private A. L. Astwood, serving with the New Zealand forces in Fiji, be returned to New Zealand, and that his sentence be reviewed. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 6th August, 1941. -
No. 31.—Petition of 0. A. B. Martin, of Auckland. Praying that lie be granted a war pension or compassionate allowance in lieu thereof. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 28th August, 1941.

No. 22.—Petition of A. J. Simpson, of Christchurch. Praying for investigation into circumstances of his application for increase in war pension. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee has carefully considered this petition, and has no recommendation to make. The Committee is advised that the petitioner is entitled, on application, to a war veteran's allowance. 11th September, 1941.
No. 56. —Petition of C. M. Bathgate and Others, of Taranaki. Praying for compensation for injuries to men attending parades of the Home Guard. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee has carefully considered the petition. The Committee is of opinion that the Government has no legal liability for the payment of compensation in this case. In view, however, of the nature of Mr. Evans's injuries, the Committee recommends the Government to give most favourable consideration to a compassionate grant. Ist October, 1941.
Special Report. 1 have the honour to report that the Defence Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the efficient services rendered by the Clerk of the Committee, Mr. E. B. Harman. 15th October, 1941. p. l. Frost, Chairman.
Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee desires to place on record its hearty appreciation of the services of its Chairman Mr. Frost, and has directed that a resolution to this effect be placed on the minutes of the Committee, and be reported to the House. 15th October, 1941. p. Carr, Member of the Committee.
Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee, consisting of ten members, lias held five meetings, with an average attendance of four members. Four petitions were considered and reported on to the House. 15th October, 1941. F. L. Frost, Chairman.
