Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Wednesday, the 26th Day or March, 1941. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from A to L which may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House ; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House ; the Committee to consist of Mr. P. Carr, Mr. Cotterill Mr. Doidge, Mr. Harker, Mr. Massey, Mr. Neilson, Mr. Richards, Mr. Roy, Mr. Seramm, and the Mover."—(Hon. Mr. Parry.)

Praying that amalgamation proposals affecting the Borough of Lawrence be not proceeded with, pending a referendum being taken of the electors concerned. I have the honour to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 29th July, 1941.
No. 34/1937.—Petition of A. M. McKinlay and 1,017 Others, of the Counties of Clutha, Tuapeka, and Bruce. Praying that amalgamation proposals affecting the counties of Bruce, Clutha, and Tuapeka be not proceeded with, pending a referendum being taken of the ratepayers concerned. I have the honour to report that the members presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommend that they'be allowed to do so. 29th July, 1941.
No. 79/1937.—Petition of W. Moore and 572 Others, of the Counties of Clutha, Tuapeka, and Bruce. Praying that amalgamation proposals affecting the counties of Bruce, Tuapeka, and Clutha be not proceeded with, pending a referendum being taken of the ratepayers concerned. I have the honour to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 29th July, 1941.

Praying that New Zealand offer hospitality to twenty-five thousand British children as soon as possible. I have the honour to report that the New Zealand Government some time ago offered hospitality to such number of British children as can conveniently be sent from Great Britain and accommodated in New Zealand. Some children had already arrived here and been placed in private homes when the British Government announced that it would have to postpone the scheme for the time being, on account of shipping difficulties. In view of the British Government's changed policy with regard to this matter, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 29th July, 1941.
No. 37/1940. —Petition of G. T. George and 3 Others, of Napier. Praying that an immediate investigation be made into the affairs of the New Zealand Underwriting and Development Corporation, Ltd. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petitioners have not exhausted all their legal remedies ; therefore, this Committee has no recommendation to make. 29th July, 1941.
No. 89/1940. —Petition of T. W. Hercock and 3 Others, of Napier. Praying for exemption from taxation levied on compensation paid by the Crown." No. 88/1940. —Petition of J. H. Edwards, of Auckland. Praying for compensation for alleged wrongful dismissal from the Post and Telegraph Service in 1929. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 14th August, 1941.
No. 15.—Petition of W. G. Lovell, of Napier. Praying for inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the sinking of his vessel " Ohinemuri." I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with a view to an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the sinking of his vessel " Ohinemuri." 14th August, 1941.

No. 18. —Petition of T. S. Jackson and 684 Others, of Christchurch. Praying for an increase in the age-benefit and amount of allowable income provided under the Social Security Act, 1938. I have the honour to report that, as a question of Government policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 28th August, 1941.
No. 82/1940. —Petition of Adelena V. Irvine, of Christchurch. Praying for a compassionate grant in consideration of her late husband's long service with the Public Works Department. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 28th August, 1941.
No. 12.—Petition of T. Clifford, of Hastings. Praying for payment of insurance in respect of the loss by fire of a motor-truck. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petitioner has not exhausted all his legal remedies. The Committee has no recommendation to make. 3rd September, 1941.

Praying for a transfer of the powers of administration in respect of the estate of petitioner's wife, payment of compensation on account of alleged loss of revenue, and other relief. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petitioner has not exhausted all his legal remedies. The Committee has no recommendation to make. 3rd September, 1941.
No. 44.—Petition of A. J. Keesing and 1,354 Others (being ratepayers and residents of the Mount Roskill Road District), of Auckland. Praying that the Mount Roskill Road District be constituted a borough. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 11th September, 1941.
No. 52. —Petition of T. V. Foster, of Auckland. Praying for compensation for alleged wrongful dismissal from the Public Service. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered this petition. In the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. Ist October, 1941.
No. 55. —Petition of M. Delich, of Auckland. Praying for compensation for loss allegedly sustained in connection with a public-works contract. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 2nd October, 1941.
No. 67. —Petition of T. M. Johnson and 42 Others, of Wellington. Praying for an increase of ss. per week in the amount provided by way of age-benefit under the Social Security Act, 1938. I have the honour to report that, as a question of Government policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 9th October, 1941.
Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions A to L Committee passed the following resolution : — " That this Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the capable and efficient service performed by the Clerk, Mr. E. B. Harman, in his work throughout the session, and it is the wish of the Committee that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes and be reported to the House." 15th October, 1941. F. W. Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions A to L Committee passed the following resolution :— " That this Committee desires to place on record its high appreciation of the very capable and courteous manner in which the Chairman, Mr. F. W. Schramm, has presided over its deliberations during the session, and directs that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House." 15th October, 1941.
