Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all matters in connection with defence which may be referred to it: the Committee to consist of Mr. Anderton, Mr. Barclay, Mr. Christie, Mr. Cullen, Colonel Hargest, Mr. Lee, Mr. Lyon, Mr. Roy, Mr. Sexton, and the Mover."—(Hon. No. 315/1936. —Petition of Alice E. Bennett. Praying for pension or other relief in consideration of her late husband's war service. I have the honour to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 24th August, 1938.

No. 101/1937-38. —Petition of L. S. Jefcoate. Praying for compensation for damage allegedly sustained through the negligence of the Defence Department. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 24th August, 1938.

No. 139/1937-38. —Petition of T. Parr. Praying that he be granted £935 compensation, or such other compensation be granted as may be just. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 24th August, 1938.

No. 147/1937-38. —Petition of W. R. White. Praying for reinstatement in the Public Service. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 24th August, 1938.

No. 8. —Petition of Edith M. Tutty. Praying that she be granted a war widow's pension. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. The Committee desires also to express its opinion that, when a man dies and is in receipt of 50 per cent, or more disability pension, his widow should receive a war widow's pension irrespective of direct attributability. 24th August, 1938.

No. 19. —Petition of R. M. Thomson. Praying for a review of the system of administration of war pensions. I have the honour to report that, as a question of policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 24th August, 1938.

No. 21. —Petition of Ivy L. Poulsen. Praying that she be granted a war widow's pension. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 24th August, 1938.

No. 71.—Petition of A. R. Clark. Praying for compensation for injuries allegedly sustained whilst acting as marker in a minaturerifle match, or re-emplyment in the Public Service. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. Ist September, 1938.

No. 73. —Petition of Vera Macpherson. Praying for a compassionate grant on account of the death of her husband as a result of being struck by a machine-gun bullet, fired from the Otatara Rifle Range, Invercargill, during military training, I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration, Ist September, 1938,

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the members of the Defence Committee desire to place on record their cordial appreciation of the ability, tact, and unfailing courtesy during the session manifested by the Chairman, Mr. W. J. Lyon, in the conduct of the business of the Committee ; and the members of the Committee further desire that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee, and also that it be reported to the House. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee desires to place on record itp appreciation of the efficient services rendered by the Clerk of the Committee, Mr. E. B. Harman. 14th September, 1938.

Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee, consisting of ten members, has held five meetings, with an average attendance of five members. Twelve petitions were considered and reported on to the House. W. J. Lyon, Chairman. 14th September, 1938.
