ORDERS OF REFERENCE.

Extracts from the Journals of the Bouse of Representatives. Friday, the 6th Day of September, 1935. Ordered " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all matters in connection with defence which may be referred to it; the Committee to consist of Mr. Barnard, Mr. Dickie, Mr. Endean, Colonel Hargest, Mr. Jordan, Mr. Lee, Captain Busliworth, Mr. Samuel, the Hon. Mr. Downie Stewart, and the Mover." —(Hon. Mr. Cobbe.) Tuesday, the 10th Day of September, 1935. Ordered " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1934-35 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session."—(Right Hon. Mr. Forbes.)

No. 4.—Petition of J. Ē. Ramsey, of Auckland. Praying that he be granted a war pension. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 9th October, 1935.

No. 47.—Petition of Bessie R. M. Mcßratney, of Winchester. Praying for a pension on account of her late husband's war service. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 9th October, 1935.

No. 18.—Petition of John W. Lilewall, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance equivalent to an old-age pension, on account of injuries allegedly sustained during the South African War. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and the Committee recommends that this is a case for a war veteran's allowance. 10th October, 1935.

No. 51. —Petition of Ida M. Rivers, of Wellington. Praying that the report and recommendation of the Defence Committee on the petition of 1934-35 be given effect to. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 10th October, 1935.

No. 371.—Petition of M. S. C. Gordon and 16 Others, of Havelock North. Praying for investigation into the quality of the ammunition supplied by the Defence Department to rifle clubs. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th October, 1935.

No. 374.—Petition of William Brodie, of Auckland. Praying that he be granted a pension or compassionate allowance on account of physical disability allegedly due to war service. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 10th October, 1935.

No. s.—Petition of R. H. Donovan, of Christchurch. Praying that he be granted a war pension. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 22nd October, 1935.

No. 33.—Petition of Margaret Redmond, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance in consideration of her late husband's services in the Defence Force. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 22nd October, 1935.

No. 35.—Petition of Mary H. Hurliman, of Normanby. Praying for payment of the war gratuity in respect of her late husband's war service. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 22nd October, 1935.

No. 40. —Petition of Esme M. Barnsley, of Petone. Praying that she be granted a pension on account of her late husband's war service. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered this petition, but, as the petitioner will now become eligible for a pension under the legislation now before Parliament, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 22nd October, 1935.

No. 53.—Petition of P. F. Toomey, of Auckland. Praying for the restoration of war pension. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration; the Committee recommend that, as the petitioner is suffering from obsessional neurosis, it is clearly a case for the war veteran's allowance. 22nd October, 1935.

No. 9 and No. 39.—Petition of Emily C. Wright, of Dunedin. Praying for a compassionate allowance in consideration of her late war service. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 25th October, 1935.

No. 43.—Petition of R. Dobson, of Waipukurau. Praying that he be granted a war pension. I have the honour to report that, as the petitioner comes within the scope of the War Veterans' Allowances Bill, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 25th October, 1935.

No. 46.—Petition of E. Nearey, of New Plymouth. Praying for the restoration of a war pension. I have the honour to report that the Committee has carefully considered the petition, and recommend that the petitioner be medically re-examined, and, with this end in view, are of the opinion that the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 25th October, 1935.

No. 52. —Petition of C. A. B. Martin, of Auckland. Praying that he be granted a war pension. I have the honour to report that, as the petitioner appears to come within the scope d£ the War Veterans' Allowances Bill, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 25th October, 1935.

No. 65.—Petition of Eva Simpson, of New Plymouth. Praying for compensation or other relief in lieu of war pension. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for sympathetic inquiry. 25th October, 1935.

No. 153— Petition of Mary E. Allen, of Wellington. Praying that she be granted a pension on account of lier late husband's war service. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the members of the Defence Committee desire to place on record their cordial appreciation of the ability, tact, and unfailing courtesy during the session manifested by the Chairman, Mr. H. G-. Dickie, in the conduct of the business of the Committee; and the members of the Committee further desire that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee, and also that it be reported to the House. 25th October, 1935 W. E. Barnard, a Member of the Committee.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee desire to place on record its appreciation of the efficient services rendered by the Clerk of the Committee, Mr. E. B. Harman, and, further, desires this resolution to be recorded in the minutes of the Committee, and be reported to the House. 25th October, 1935.

Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee, consisting of ten members, has held five meetings during the session, and the average attendance of members has been five. Eighteen petitions were referred to the Committee and reported on to the House. 25th October, 1935. H. G. Dickie, Chairman.
