ORDERS OF REFERENCE.

Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Tuesday, the 10th Day of July, 1934. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all matters in connection 'with defence which may be referred to it: the Committee to consist of Mr. Barnard, Mr. Dickie, Mr. Endean. Mr. Hargest, Mr. Healy, Mr. Jordan, Mr. Lee, Hon. Downie Stewart, Captain Rushworth, and the Mover.''—(Hon. Mr. Cobbe.) Thursday, the 26th Day of July, 1934. Ordered, " That all petitions referred to the Public Petitions A to L (Supplementary) Committee and the Public Petitions M to Z (Supplementary) Committee during the session of 1933, and not finally dealt with, be referred to the Public Petitions A to L and M to Z Committees respectively, and that all other petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1933 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session."—(Right Hon. Mr. Forbes.) Wednesday, the 24th Day of October, 1934. Ordered, " That the Defence Committee have leave to sit during the present sitting of the House." — (Mr. Dickie.) No. 2,-—Petition of Edith M. Lennox, of Wellington. Praying for an annuity or other relief in respect of her late husband's war service. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. The Committee is agreed that this is a typical case indicating the necessity for amendment of the law. Bth August, 1934.

No. 3.—Petition of Ida M. Rivers, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance or other relief in respect of her late husband's war service. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 9th August, 1934.

No. 1. —Petition of W. Milroy, of Wellington. Praying that he be paid for accrued leave allegedly due on retirement from Defence Department. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 9th August, 1934.

No. 258, 1933.—Petition of D. F. Dick, of Sumner. Praying for an increased pension on account of war disabilities allegedly contracted while on active service. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 9th August, 1934.

No. 62.—Petition of R. H. Donovan, of Sumner. Praying that he be granted a war pension. lam directed to report that the petition be referred to the Government for consideration. The Committee is of the opinion that the disability occurred during the petitioner's term of service in the Imperial Forces. . 9th August, 1934.

No. 72. —Petition of Lily M. Waters, of Christchurch. Praying for a compassionate allowance in respect of her late husband's war service. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 16th August, 1934.

No. 73.—Petition of Beatrice Stanton, of Martinborougli. Praying for a pension in respect of her late husband's war service. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 16th August, 1934.

No. 240.—Petition of H. N. Pearson, of Manaia. Praying for gratuity or compassionate allowance to the extent of £2 per week for himself, wife, and children. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 25th October, 1934.

No. 239. —Petition of L. Sayers, of Riccarton. Praying for inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his retirement from the Defence Department. I am directed to report that the Committee, having heard further evidence, including that of the officers of the Defence Department, has no recommendation to make. 25th October, 1934.

No. 165. —Petition of B. Key, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance in consideration of his war service and service with the Samoa Civil Police Force. I am directed to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. Ist November, 1934.

No. 24.—Petition of Agnes W. Smailes, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance in respect of her late husband's war service. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 21st February, 1935.

No. 318. —Petition of A. J. Simpson, of Wellington. Praying that he be granted an increased pension in respect of a disability contracted while on war service. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 7th March, 1935.

No. 343. —Petition of Maggie Tims and Another, of Grey Lynn. Praying that the estate of their deceased brother be credited with the amount of pension due as the result of injuries sustained while on war service. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 7th March, 1935.

No. 352. —Petition of C. L. Graham, of Wellington. Praying for an increase in his war pension. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 21st March, 1935.

No. 346. —Petition of J. Piercy, of Mataura. Praying for reconsideration of his military pension. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 22nd March, 1935. H. G. Dickie, Chairman.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the members of the Defence Committee desire to place on record their appreciation of the ability, tact, and unfailing courtesy during the session manifested by the Chairman, Mr. Dickie, in the conduct of the business of the Committee : and the members of the Committee further desire that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee, and also that it be reported to the House. 29th March, 1935. Special Report. I HAVE the honour to report that at its final meeting the Defence Committee expressed by resolution its high appreciation of the efficient services rendered to the Committee by the Clerk, Mr. E. B. Harman, and directed that the resolution be reported to the House. 29th March, 1935. w. E. Barnard, Member of the Committee.

Final Report. I have the honour to report that during the present session the Defence Committee, consisting of ten members, has held sixteen meetings, with an average attendance of five.
