I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make respecting the prayer of the petitioners ; but is of the opinion that when a State Department approves of a subcontractor the Department should require the sub-contractor to take the necessary steps to secure payment of the sub-contract price. 22nd November, 1933.

Praying that the privilege of free railway travel previously extended to members of the Association when travelling to attend annual meetings be restored. I am directed to report that, in view of the great economic value of the services rendered by the United Fire Brigades Association of New Zealand, the Committee, notwithstanding a matter of Government policy is involved, is of the opinion that the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 22nd November, 1933.

No. 239. —Petition of Annie L. Matheson, of Auckland. Praying for compensation for alleged wrongful imprisonment, and for redress by having her name expunged from the criminal records. I am directed to report that the Committee has given the petitioner and her counsel the fullest opportunity of stating her case, has examined the petitioner, departmental officers, and records, and after the most careful and sympathetic consideration to the prayer of the petition, the Committee finds that the petitioner has not exhausted her legal remedies and therefore has no recommendation to make. 15th December, 1933.

No. 59.—Petition of Mary Pilling, of Auckland. Praying for enactment of legislation enabling certain Court proceedings to be reopened. t am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 15th December, 1933.

Praying that legislation be enacted to provide that none of the powers conferred by the Electric-power Boards Act, 1925, and its amendments be exercised to discriminate between the portions of a district constituted under the said Act, except for the purpose of providing an unforeseen deficiency in revenue. I am directed to report that, as a matter of policy is involved, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 15th December, 1933.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions M to Z Committee desires to express its sincere appreciation of the able manner in which the Chairman, Mr. F. Lye, has presided over and conducted the business brought before the Committee during the session. His courteous and tactful manner in dealing with members and witnesses, his close attention and impartial summing-up of the evidence has enabled the Committee to arrive at unanimous conclusions ; and it desires that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and reported to the House.
