ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Friday, the 6th Day of October, 1933. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all matters in connection with Defence which may be referred to it: the Committee to consist of Mr. Barnard, Mr. Dickie, Mr. Endean, Mr. Hargest, Mr. Healy, Mr. Jordan, Mr. Lee, Mr. McDougall, Captain Rushworth, and the mover."—(Hon. Mr. Cobbe.) Wednesday, the 18th Day of October, 1933. Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the 1932-33 session be again referred to the same Committees that they were referred to during the said session."—(Right Hon. Mr. Forbes.) Friday, the 3rd Day of November, 1933. Ordered, " That the War Pensions Amendment Bill be referred to the Defence Committee." —(Mr. Lee.) Wednesday, the 6th Day of December, 1933. REPORTS.
No. 63, 1932-33. —Petition of T. Farr, of Wellington. Praying that he be granted either reinstatement in the Defence Force or compensation in lieu thereof up to his normal retiring period, 31st December, 1933. I am directed to report that, as the petitioner is at present in the employ of the Defence Department, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 24th November, 1933.
No. 25.—Petition of Florence M. Harrison, of New Plymouth. 1 raying for a compassionate allowance or other relief in respect of her late husband's war service. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 24th November, 1933.
War Pensions Amendment Bill. I am directed to report that, as the Bill in its present form cannot under Standing Orders proceed, the subject-matter with the evidence be referred to the Government, with a request for sympathetic investigation and action. 29th November, 1933.
No. 311, 1932-33 and No. 202.—Petitions of R. Brown, of Grassmere. Praying for a pension or compassionate allowance in respect of a war disability. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petitions should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and is of the opinion that the time has arrived when the increasing unemployability and sickness of returned soldiers necessitates an inquiry with a view to further liberalization of the War Pensions Act. 29th November, 1933.
No. 128. Petition of C. A. B. Martin, of Auckland. Praying that he be granted a war pension. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 29th November, 1933.
No. 20. —Petition of W. Milroy, of Wellington. Praying that he be paid for accrued leave allegedly due on his retirement from the Defence Force. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make 29th November, 1933.
No. 192. Petition of A. W. J. Shutt, of Dunedin. Praying for compensation for loss of leg, allegedly sustained as a result of medical examination held prior to being called up for war service in 1919. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make 29th November, 1933.
No. 56. -Petition of J. E. Ramsey, of Auckland. Praying that he be granted a war pension. I am directed that m the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. wvern 29th November, 1933.
No. 231.—Petition of A. R. Williamson, of Christchurch. Praying that he be granted a pension on account of alleged disabilities sustained while on war service, am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make otn December, 1933.
No. 199.—Petition of Margaret Redmond, of Auckland, Praying for a compassionate allowance on account of her late husband's services in the Defence Force m directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. e 10 Bth December, 1933.

No. 13. —Petition of N. B. Fryday, of Ngaere. Praying for compensation for alleged compulsory retirement from Defence Force. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for consideration. Bth December, 1933.
No. 227. —Petition of P. Malone, of Invercargill. Praying that he be granted a war pension on account of alleged war disabilities contracted as a result of war services. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 13th December, 1933.
No. 238. —Petition of H. Dobbie, of Auckland. Praying that he be granted a pension or compassionate allowance, on account of alleged disabilities sustained on active service. I have the honour to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for consideration. 13th December, 1933.
No. 237. —Petition of G. A. Gibbs, of Picton. Praying for compensation for alleged loss of leave, and also outfit-grant, whilst employed in the Defence Department. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration in respect of the first part of the praver of the petition. 15th December, 1933.
No. 248. —Petition of Mary H. Hurliman, of Normanby. Praying for payment of the war gratuity in respect of her late husband's war service. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 15th December, 1933. H. G. Dickie, Chairman.
Special Report. I have the honour to report that the members of the Defence Committee desire to place on record their appreciation of the ability, tact, and unfailing courtesy during the session manifested by the Chairman, Mr. Dickie, in the conduct of the business of the Committee ; and the members of the Committee further desire that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee, and also that it be reported to the House. 20th December, 1933. Special Report. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Defence Committee expressed by resolution its high appreciation of the efficient services rendered to the Committee by the Clerk, Mr. E. B. Harman, and directed that the resolution be reported to the House. 20th December. 1933.
Final Report. I have the honour to report that during the present session the Defence Committee, consisting of ten members, has held six meetings, with an average attendance of five. Fifteen petitions were referred to the Committee, and reported on to the House ; also one Bill was referred to the Committee, and reported on to the House. 20th December, 1933. H. G.
