1931. NEW ZEALAND.
DEPARTMENT OF IMMIGRATION (ANNUAL REPORT OF).
Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.
Sib, — Department of Immigration, 9th June, 1931. Herewith I have the honour to submit the annual report on the immigration which has taken place into New Zealand from the United Kingdom during the year 1930-31. I have, &c., H. D. Thomson, Under-Secretary. The Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Immigration, Wellington.
REPO R T. During the past year the restricted policy adopted by the Government has been carried out very strictly, and consequently the number of new arrivals shows a further decline. The farm-training scheme for New Zealand boys, the inauguration of which was noted in my previous report, has not met with the success that was expected, as the following details will show : total applications received from-boys, 20 number of boys placed on farms, 13 ; number of boys still on farms, 3. Of the thirteen boys placed under the scheme, seven relinquished farming for various reasons, three are still on farms, one is attending Massey Agricultural College, one is under the control of the Child Welfare Department, and one is unemployed. On the whole, the type of boy offering has been disappointing. The Department has not been able to place the other seven applicants owing to the fact that no further applications have been received from farmers. Requests for boys were fairly numerous up to September, 1930, but since then practically no inquiries have been received, which circumstance is due undoubtedly to the present difficult times. The total number of arrivals in New Zealand from the United Kingdom and Ireland during the year ended 31st March, 1931, was 2,610 (1,329 males and 1,281 females). Out of the total number of arrivals —namely, 2,610 —1,233 were assisted to New Zealand by the Imperial and New Zealand Governments, and this number includes persons nominated from New Zealand and those who applied for assisted passages in London.
