ORDER OF REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Friday, the 2nd Day of August, 1929. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to deal with all matters in connection with defence ; with power to call for persons, papors, and records ; three to bo a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Barnard, Mr. Dickie, Mr. Jenkins, Mr. Jordan, Colonel McDonald, Mr. Poison, Captain Rushworth, Mr. Samuel, Mr. Waite, and the mover."—(Hon. Mr. Wilford.)

REPORTS. No. I.—Petition of Alan Leslie McAllum, of New Plymouth. Praying for an alteration in the law in regards to soldiers' pensions, and for the fixing of a permanent pension for himself and wife. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 11th September, 1929.

No. 175. —Petition of William Arthur Painter D'Oridant, of Christchurch. Praying for further redress and compensation from the Defence Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 2nd October, 1929.

No. 291.—Petition of Marion Thomson, of Wellington. Praying for a compassionate allowance in respect to her late husband's services as an Instructor in the Defence Forces. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 2nd October, 1929.

No. 308. —Petition of Gladys Beatrice May Gillies, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance in respect to the death of her husband, an A.B. serving on H.M.S. "Dunedin." I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 2nd October, 1929.

No. 60. —Petition of Janet Una Livingstone Affleck, of Christchurch. Praying that she may be granted compensation and a soldier's widow's pension. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 29th October, 1929.

No. 104. —Petition of John Barrett, of Christchurch. Praying for a military pension and such other compensation as may be determined. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 7th November, 1929.

No. 277. —Petition of Sydney Tovey, of Wellington. Praying for the grant of £3,000, compensation for neglect in treatment. I am directed to report that, owing to the conflicting nature of the evidence adduced as to the extent of disability, the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for further inquiry. 7th November, 1929.

No. 311. —Petition of Lawrence L. Gibbs, of Wakefield. Praying for a compassionate allowance in lieu of retrospective pension. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 7th November, 1929.

Special Report. I am directed to report that the Defence Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the work done during the session by the Clerk to the Committee, Mr. W. Rea, and directs that a resolution to this effect be placed upon the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. sth November, 1929.

Special Report. I am directed to report that the Defence Committee desires to place on record its hearty appreciation of the services of its Chairman, Colonel McDonald, and has directed that a resolution to this effect be placed upon the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. W. E. Barnard, 7th November, 1929. Member of the Committee.

Final Report. I have the honour to report that during the present session the Defence Committee, consisting of ten members, has held nine meetings, the average attendance of members at each meeting being seven. The business referred to the Committee consisted of twelve petitions, all of which were considered and reported on. T. W. McDonald, Chairman. 7th November, 1929.
