ORDER OP REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Thursday, the 14th Day of July, 1927. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to deal with all matters in connection with defence; with power to call for persons, papers, and records ; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Dickie, Mr. Glenn, Mr. Hudson, Mr. Jordan, Mr. J. A. Lee, Mr. J. Mason, Mr. Potter, Mr. Ransom, Mr. Seddon, and the mover."—(Hon. Mr. F. J. Rolleston.)

No. 49.—Petition of W. Newton, of Pahiatua. Praying for compensation or pension on account of disability owing to war service. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make in regard to this petition. 31st August, 1927.

No. 58. —Petition of J. Dowd, of Gisborne. Praying that he may be granted a Maori War Medal. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the Defence Department make application to the Imperial authorities for the issue of a New Zealand War Medal to the petitioner. 31st August, 1927.

No. 116.—Petition of Cashel Mills, of Christchurch. Praying for soldier's widow's pension or other compensation on account. of the death of her husband. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 31st August, 1927.

No. 127.—Petition of H. G. Stebbing, of Hawera. Praying for reinstatement of military pension. I am directed to report that, as the petitioner has additional evidence to offer, the Committee recommends the War Pensions Appeal Board to grant him a rehearing of his case. 31st August, 1927.

No. 30.—Petition of H. Lippitt and 29 Others, of Pahiatua. Praying for a subsidy for miniature rifle ranges. I am directed to report that the member presenting this petition being desirous of withdrawing the same, the Committee recommends that the member be allowed to do so. sth October, 1927.

No. 117.—Petition of P. C. Murdoch, of Hamilton. Praying for a loan of £250 to enable him to set up shop for mechanical repairs. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. sth October, 1927.

No. 232.—Petition of Elizabeth Hunter, of Petone. Praying for a compassionate allowance on account of her husband's service in the Defence Forces. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. sth October, 1927.

No. 238. —Petition of Janne Lury, of Auckland. Praying for a retrospective war pension not claimed at time of her son's death. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make in regard to this petition. 6th October, 1927.

No. 132.—Petition of J. Shortal, of Invercargill. Praying for inquiry into alleged wrongful discharge from duty with the New Zealand Military Forces. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 17th October, 1927.

No. 263. —Petition of A. R. D. Box, of Port Chalmers. Praying for redress and compensation on account of alleged wrongful detention in a mental hospital. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 17th October, 1927.

No. 268.—Petition of A. L. McAllum, of New Plymouth. Praying that provision be made for him to receive a pension or allowance owing to ill health occasioned by war service. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 17th October, 1927.

No. 230.—Petition of A. T. McNeilage, of Pahiatua. Praying for the same treatment as a returned soldier in regard to the supplying of artificial limbs. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to the prayer of this petition, but suggests for the consideration of the Government the supply of a new artificial limb to the petitioner. 28th October, 1927.

No. 288.—Petition of R. B. Brickell, of War Veterans' Home, Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance on account of service in the Maori War. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 28th October, 1927.

No. 296. —Petition of N. B. Fryday, of Ngaere. Praying that certain words be inscribed on the tombstone of his son, E. J. Fryday, a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 28th October, 1927.

No. 332.—Petition of F. Jecentho and 160 Others, of Peria. Praying that a war pension be granted to N. S. Hathaway. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 11th November, 1927.

No. 334. —Petition of E. W. Veysey, of Hastings. Praying for restoration of a soldier's pension. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 11th November, 1927.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Defence Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the efficient and impartial manner in which the Chairman, Mr. Potter, has conducted the business of the Committee during the present session ; and further desires that a resolution to this effect be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. Final Report. J am directed to report that the Defence Committee held its final meeting on the 28th November. During the session the Committee held nine meetings, the average attendance of members at each meeting being seven.
