ORDER OF REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Thursday, the 16th Day of July, 1925. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions froih M to Z that may be referred to it by the Petitions Classification Committee, to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House, and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House ; also to have power to call for persons and papers; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Bell, Mr. de la Perrelle, Mr. J. McC. Dickson, Mr. Hawken, Mr. Jordan, Mr. Macmillan, Mr. T. W. Rhodes, Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Thomson, and the mover."—(Hon. Mr. Bollard.)

REPORTS. Nos. 418/24, 57/25. —Petition of William Matthews, of Ashley. Praying for a refund of £16 19s. 9d., being amount paid by him as land-tax in 1919 in error, the amount also having been paid by the owner of the land for the same year. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 19th August, 1925.

No. 7. —Petition of Thomas McMillan and George Henry Lash, of Hurleyville. Praying that the Deputy Commissioner of Stamp Duties be directed to refund to the petitioners the sum of £102, paid as ad valorem duty on an agreement to lease and purchase certain lands, and which was not completed. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 19th August, 1925.

No. 16. —Petition of John Kickerby, of 147 Lower Styx Road, Marshland. Praying for a refund of £130, being value of stock and implements belonging to him alleged to have been wrongfully seized and sold by the Government from the property of his son in the Isleworth Settlement, Hinds. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for consideration. 19th August, 1925.

No. 21.' —Petition of Henry Peskett, of Woodend, North Canterbury. Praying for a refund of stamp duty paid on an agreement to purchase certain land at Oxford, and not completed. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 19th August, 1925.

No. 22.—Petition of R. D. B. Robinson, of Gisborne. Praying that he be not held responsible for certain land-tax demanded by the Commissioner of Taxes, and also for an amendment of the existing law so that taxpayers will not be penalized by the quantity of land held by other persons. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 19th August, 1925.

Praying for an amendment of the Gaming Amendment Act, 1920, so as to enable bookmakers to be licensed under proper safeguards. No. 102. —Petition of William Reddy and 50 Others. Praying for an amendment of the regulations which prevent them from carrying their produce 1o market in their own launches. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with a recommendation that the Act be amended on the lines indicated in the petition. 19th August, 1925.

No. 103. —Petition of Henry Blair Smyth, of 16 Holly Road, Christchurch. Praying for redress for loss caused through wrongful information said to have been received from an official in the office of the High Commissioner, London. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 20th August, 1925.

No. 40. —Petition of H. A. Robertson and 3,164 Others. Praying that the commencement of work upon the northern route be expedited so that its completion may synchronize with the erection of the new Auckland Station and the completion of the new southern route. I am directed to report that as the matter is being satisfactorily dealt with by the Railway Board, and the allocation of money available has already been made, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th September, 1925.

No. 51.—Petition of William Murdoch, of Shannon, and 215 Others. Praying for the restoration of a bridge over the Manawatu River, near Shannon, which had been washed away by flood. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for consideration. 10th September, 1925.

No. 55.—Petition of J. G. Ward, of Heretaunga, and 183 Others. Praying that Cockle Cove, in the Bay of Many Coves, Queen Charlotte Sound, be preserved as a scenic reserve. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 10th September, 1925.

No. 110. —Petition of Charles On yon, of Wellington. Praying that he be paid the sum of £17 14s. 3d., said to be due for services as shorthand reporter to the Westport Harbour Board Affairs Commission. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th September, 1925.

No. 136.—Petition of Ada Mary Shad bolt, of Hamilton. Praying that a Royal Commission be appointed to inquire into certain allegations made in respect to several legal actions taken by the Shadbolt family. I am directed to report that, as the petitioner has intimated her intention to present another petition of a different nature, this Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th September, 1925.

No. 141. —Petition of J. C. McLellan, of Christchurch. Praying for compensation for alleged wrongful arrest on a charge of theft of a postal document. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 10th September, 1925.

No. 142.—Petition of J. D. McKenzie, of Takahiwai, and 84 Others. Praying for the construction of a deviation of the road connecting Takahiwai Settlement and One Tree Point. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, subject to the local body proceeding with the legalization required. 10th September, 1925.

No. 151. —Petition of B. G. Sanft, of Auckland. Praying the he may be registered as a dentist under the Dental Act. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be dealt with by the Public Health Committee. 10th September, 1925.

No. 181.—Petition of Charles Onyon, of Wellington. Praying for payment of an amount alleged to be due for services as shorthand reporter to the Commission on the Regulation of Trade and Commerce. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th September, 1925.

No. 232.—Petition of Frederick Peters, of Otahuhu. Praying for compensation for loss of time and money through not being able to register as a dentist in New Zealand. I am directed that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 24th September, 1925.

No. 210.—Petition of H. A. Morrison (Limited), of Dannevirke. Praying for a refund of £100 paid as ad valorem duty on the transfer of a property. No. 199.—Petition of H. J. Montgomery, of Auckland. Praying for compassionate grant owing to blindness and ill health, after twenty years' service in the Police Force. No. 234. —Petition of Emily Wilson, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance in respect of the services of her late husband, formerly a messenger in Parliament Buildings. No. 205.—Petition of E. C. Moon, of Te Uku. Praying for a compassionate allowance on account of being retired from the Public Service. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with a suggestion that petitioner be granted a small compassionate allowance until he reaches the age to qualify for the old-age pension. 28th September, 1925.

No. 133. —Petition of Violet Watson, of Napier. Praying that the Public Trustee pay her the balance of her late husband's insurance. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 28th September, 1925.

No. 245. —Petition of John Simpson, of Invercargill. Praying for a compassionate allowance owing to the drowning of his son whilst an inmate of the Weraroa State Farm. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 28th September, 1925.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Committee desires to record its hearty appreciation of the ability, care, and attention devoted by the Chairman, Mr. J. McC. Dickson, to the business of the Committee, and of the courteous and tactful manner in which his duties have been carried out during the session ; and further desire that this resolution shall be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. 28th September, 1925. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Committee desires to record its appreciation of the efficient manner in which the Clerk of the Public Petitions M to Z Committee, Mr. R. H.
