Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to whom shall be referred all matters relating to labour ; with power to call for persons and papers ; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. J. S. Dickson, Mr. Howard, Mr. Linklater, Sir J. P. Luke, Mr. Lye, Mr. Lysnar, Mr. McKeen, Mr. McLeod, Mr. Veitch, and the mover." —(Hon. Mr. Anderson.) Wednesday, the 18th Day of Jttly, 1923. Ordered, " That the Workers' Compensation Amendment Bill be referred to the Labour Bills Committee."— (Mr. Howard.) Thursday, the 26th Day of July, 1923. Ordered, " That the Companies Empowering Bill bo referred to the Labour Bills Committee."—(Hon. Mr. Anderson.) Tuesday, the 7th Day oe August, 1923. Ordered, " That the petition of the New Plymouth Retailers' Association be referred direct to the Labour Bills Committee."—(Mr. Smith.) Wednesday, the 15th Day of August, 1923. Ordered, " That the Inspection of Machinery Amendment Bill be referred to the Labour Bills Committee."— (Hon. Mr. Anderson.)

RBPOKTS. Workers' Compensation Amendment Bill. I am directed to report that the Committee has carefully considered the above Bill, and recommends that it be not allowed to proceed this session. 14th August, 1923.

No. 134. —Petition of P. N. Denton, of Wellington, and 16 Others. Praytng that a clause be inserted in the Shops and Offices Act to enable jewellers' shops to remain open until 9 p.m. each evening for six days immediately before Christmas. I am directed to report that the Committee has considered the above petition and has no recommendation to make. 14th August, 1923.

No. 101, Petition of J. G. Gleghorn, of Auckland, and 95 Others ; No. 105, Petition of Browns Limited, of Dunedin, and 11 Others ; No. 106, Petition of A. Leitch, of Wellington, and 16 Others ; No. 107, Petition of A. H. Challis, of Dunedin, and 2 Others ; No. 108, Petition of James Brown, of Dunedin, and Another. Praying for legislation extending the hours of employment for females working in restaurants and confectionery-shops. I am directed to report that the Committee has considered the above petitions and has no recommendation to make. 14th August, 1923.

No. 147. —Petition of New Plymouth Eetailers' Association, of New Plymouth. Praying that the Shops and Offices Act be amended to enable the present disabilities suffered by employers in respect to the weekly half-holiday of employees to be overcome. I am directed to report that the Committee has considered the above petition and has no recommendation to make. 15th August, 1923.

Inspection op Machinery Amendment Bill. The Labour Bills Committee, to which was referred the above-mentioned Bill, has the honour to report that the said Bill has been carefully considered, and the Committee recommends that it be not allowed to proceed this session. 21st August, 1923.

The Labour Bills Committee, to which was referred the above-mentioned Bill, has the honour to report that the said Bill has been carefully considered, and the Committee recommends that it be allowed to proceed, with amendments as shown on the copy of the Bill attached. 21st August, 1923. i *

Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Labour Bills Committee has held during the session six meetings, with an average attendance of seven members at each meeting. Seven petitions and three Bills were referred to the Committee, and reported upon to the House. 28th August, 1923.
