GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS SUPERANNUATION FUND. REPORT OF BOARD.
Laid before Parliament in pursuance of Section 91 of the Government Railways Act, 1908.
In accordance with section 91 of the Government Railways Act, 1908, the Board has the honour to transmit, for the information of Parliament, its balance-sheet, which shows the transactions in the Government Railways Superannuation Fund for the year ended 31st March, 1919. The superannuation allowances actually paid during the year amounted to £88,969 7s. 3d., representing grants to 1,056 members of the Railway service who have either voluntarily resigned or been retired as medically unfit. Allowances amounting to £11,080 7s. 4d. were paid in respect to 383 widows and 535 children, dependants of deceased members of the service who had not retired on superannuation at the time of their death. Payments amounting to £1,308 lis. 7d. were made to the legal representatives of the deceased members under section 86, subsection (c), and section 82, subsection (6), of the Act. A sum of £28,309 os. Bd., representing contributions of members of the service who voluntarily retired or whose services were otherwise dispensed with during the year, was refunded to the members concerned in accordance with the provisions of the Act. Fines remitted to members amounted to £1 155.; travelling-expenses of members of the Board, £48 14s. ; contributions transferred to Public Service Superannuation Fund, £74 lis. 7d. ; and charges paid to Public Trust Office, £290 10s. 4d. The balance to the credit of the accumulated fund on the 31st March, 1919, was £363,804 4s. 4d., a decrease of £9,293 Bs. 3d. The gross income for the year was £120,851 7s. sd. The income from contributions of members of the fund amounted to £78,825 ss. 5d., or £23,039 less than the actual annual liability on 31st March. The fund was relieved of an annual liability of £32,753 ss. in respect to these 461 members; 368 children have reached the age of fourteen years, 8 children have died, 60 widows remarried, 35 widows died, 1 widow refused allowance, and 1 allowance remains unclaimed; lessening the liability of the fund by an additional £6,648 2s. per annum. There were 1,872 persons actually on the fund at the 31st March, 1919, involving an annual liability of £101,864 ss. sd. W. H.
