Ordered, " That a Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to examine and report upon questions relating to the railways, with power to call for persons and papers; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Buick, Mr. Dickson, Mr. Hine, Hon. No. 322 (1911). —Petition of Everett Chappell, of Christchurch. Praying for redress in connection with an injury received while in the Railway service. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. 3rd September, 1912.

No. I.—Petition of William Blake, of 16 Nelson Street, Petone. Praying for compensation for loss of employment in the Railway service. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. 3rd September, 1912.

No. 29.—Petition of A. H. Philip, of Albion Street, Parnell, Auckland. Praying for compensation for injuries sustained while in the Railway Department. I am directed to report that the Committee, taking all the circumstances of the case into consideration, recommends that petitioner be granted a compassionate allowance of £50, and that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 11th September, 1912.

No. 80. —Petition of Thomas McGahan, of Tuakau, Auckland. Praying for compensation for loss of office as porter in the Railway service. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petitioner receive back pay for the period between the date of the decision of the Appeal Board and the date of actual reinstatement by the Railway Department, and that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 19th September, 1912.

No. 3.—Petition of William Joseph Harrington, of Lyttelton. Praying for reconsideration of his case in connection with the loss of his position in the New Zealand Railway service. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 19th September, 1912.

No. B.—Petition of J. B. Barrington and Another, of Marton. Praying for compensation on account of the death of their child through a railway accident. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. 19th September, 1912.

No. 11. —Petition of Susan Ursula Claude, of Carlton Gore Road, AucklandPraying for further relief in connection with the death of her husband, F. A. Claude, which she asserts was accelerated by his action in stopping a runaway train on the North Island Main Trunk Railway. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. 19th September, 1912.

No. 148. —Petition of Ellen F. Saddler, of Christchurch. Praying for compensation for injuries received in the Rakaia railway accident. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 24th September, 1912.

No. 320 (1911) and No. 58 (1912).— Petition of Alexander Frame, jun., of Bradshaw Street, South Dunedin. Praying for redress in connection with his dismissal from the Railway service. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. Bth October, 1912.

No. 247.—Petition of John D. Cooper, of Wellington. Praying for compensation for accident sustained at the Kaitoke Railway-station. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. Bth October, 1912.

No. 59.—Petition of John Green and 7 Others, of Granity. (Second Report.) Praying for reduction of rent of their sections at Granity. I am directed to report that the Committee, having further considered the prayer of this petition, has no recommendation to make thereon. 24th October, 1912.

Government Railways Amendment Bill. The Railways Committee, to whom was referred the above-mentioned Bill, have the honour to report that they have taken evidence thereon, and have carefully considered the same, and recommend that the Bill be allowed to proceed as amended in the copy annexed hereto. 28th October, 1912.

No. 129. —Petition of the Paparoa Coal-mining Company (Limited). Praying that the Government purchase the company's railway and modify the charges for carrying coal. I am directed to report, — (].) That with regard to the purchase of the Paparoa Coal-mining Company's railway the Committee has no recommendation to make. (2.) That the removal of anomalies regarding the carriage of coal be referred to the Government or favourable consideration (vide also 1.-6 a). 29th October, 1912.

No. 248. —Petition of Michael Lucy, of Rangiora. Praying for relief on account of the imprisonment of his son. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. 4th November, 1912.

No. 280. —Petition of Robert Old, of Fitzroy, New Plymouth. Praying for compassionate allowance to the widow of Alfred Old, on account of the death of her husband whilst in the employ of the Railway Department. I am directed to report that the Committee recommend this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 4th November, 1912.

The Railways Committee has the honour to report that at the final meeting of the Committee, held on the 4th day of November, 1912, the following resolution was passed unanimously :— "That the RaiCays Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the great care and ++ *■ Iwf+Jnwfhe Chairman Mr Buick, to the business of the Committee, and of the courteous out during this session of Parliament Further, that EresoSutirbe recorded in the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. 4th November, 1912.
