List of Relics, including some which belonged to Captain Cook, presented to the Dominion op New Zealand by Loed St. Oswald. [The numerals in brackets indioate the number of the case in which the articles were packed.] Attributed to Lot No. in Catalogue. 13 One pattapattoo of stone, one of bone, and a stone hatchet from New Zealand (3). 15 Two pattapattoos of wood (2). 17 Three fish-hooks (2), and two axes (3). 19 African instrument of music, called the " balafou " (4). 23, 42 Dress of the chief mourner of Otaheite, made principally of mother-of-pearl and the feathers of the tropic bird (2). 24 Fine feather idol, of the Sandwich Isles (1). 25 Helmet and feather cloak, Otaheite (1). 26 Pair of bracelets, of boars' teeth (2). 27 Feather cloak, made principally of the black feathers of powhee bird, bordered with red and yellow (1). 28 Feather hat (2). 31 Fly flap, brought by Captain Cook; the handle made of the bone of the arm of a chief taken in battle (1). 32 War-club, armed with a stone (3), and a small idol (2). 34 The feather cloak and helmet, particularly described in " Cook's Voyages," and presented to him, a short time before his death, by the King of Owyhee (1). 35 Military gorget, worn by the warriors of Otaheite (2). 39 Two nose-flutes, Sandwich Isles (1). 41 Pattapattoo (carved) (3). 43 Short war-club (3). 47 Two idols of jade stone, from New Zealand; and an ornamental knife, edged with sharks' teeth (1). 57 Five spears and two war-clubs (3). 60 African horn (3), two African fans (1), and one pouch (2). Sixteen fish-hooks, and one double ditto (2). A stone, probably used as a fish-weight (2). One pair of large shoes, one small shoe, and three gloves; all from Fiji (3). Two flint instruments (3). Two bone instruments (3). Maori war-club, with carved end (3). The above are certified to be packed in four cases despatched to New Zealand by the s.s. " Corinthic," sailing on 29th February, 1912.
