STATUTORY HOLIDAYS (RETURN OF).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 19th October, 1910. Ordered " That there be laid before this House a return showing what are at present the statutory holidays for (a) banks, (6) factories, (c) shops, and (<i) offices."—(Hon. Sir W. J. Stewabd.)

(a ) Banks (Banking Act, 1908, Section 23).—New Year's Day, Good Friday, the day after Good Friday Easter Monday,' Whit Monday, Christmas Day, the. day after Christmas Day, St. Patrick's Day (17th March), St. George's Day (23rd April), St. Andrew's Day (30th November), the Sovereign's Birthday, the Prince of Wales' Birthday, and Labour Day. (b) Factories (Factories Act, 1908, Section 35).—Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, and the birthday of the reigning Sovereign ; also a halfholiday every week from 1 p.m. on Saturday or other day as fixed by poll of electors under section 36. (These holidays are not closing-days, but merely statutory holidays for females and for boys under eighteen.) (c) Shops (Shops and Offices Act, 1908, Section 11).— There are no statutory holidays for shops except a weekly half-holiday from 1 p.m., the day of which is fixed for each local district. Any shopkeeper may,' however, observe Saturday as his weekly half-holiday instead of the day fixed. (Under section 18, certain shops are exempt from closing.) (d) Offices (Shops and Offices Act, 1908, Sections 27 and 28).—There is no statutory holiday for offices except a weekly half-holiday from 1 p.m. on Saturday, but any occupier may close on the day for shops instead of on Saturday. (Under sections 2 and 27 many offices are exempt.) Approximate cost of paper. —Preparation, not given; printing (1,500 copies), £1 2s. 6d.
