1907. NEW ZEALAND.

EDUCATION: CHILDREN IN CARE OF THE STATE (PARTICULARS RELATING TO).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 31st July, 1907. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing (1) the total number of ohildren under fourteen years old in the care of the State, either residing at or connected with industrial schools, industrial farms, deafmute institutions, orphanages, receiving homes, or any other institutions: (2) the number of children of any age boarded out from such institutions with persons who receive payment for the care of them, indicating for what length of time they have been boarded out, and how many foster-homes they have lived in ; also the number of them who are between four and fourteen years of age : (3) the number of such children placed out at service on farms as domestic helps, &c, showing the number of boys and girls separately: (4) the number who are with friends, or who otherwise do not come within the two preceding definitions : (5) similar particulars relating to ohildren under the control of each Charitable Aid Board : (6) the number of children placed in homes under the Infant Life Protection Act: (7) the number in mental asylums : (S) all these particulars to be given as at the 30th June, 1907." —(Mr. Tanner.)

Eetuhn. (1.) The total number of children under fourteen years of age in the care of the State either residing at or connected with industrial schools, industrial farms, deaf-mute institutions, orphanages, receiving homes, or any other institutions, is 1,205. (2.) The number of children of any age boarded out from such institutions with persons who receive payment for the care of them is 697. The subjoined table indicates for what length of time they have been boarded out, and how many foster-homes they have lived in :—

The number of children included in the above table who are between four and fourteen years of age is 507. (3.) The number of such children placed out at service on farms, as domestic helps, &c. (boys and girls) is nil. (4.) The number with friends, or who do not otherwise come within the two preceding defini tions, 45 ; girls, 29 : total, 74.
