LABOUR BUREAUX (PARTICULARS RELATIVE TO) FOR 1902-3.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 24th July, 1903. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing—(l) the number of Labour Bureaux in the colony; (2) the amount of salaries paid to Inspectors and other officials of the Labour Department; and (3) the amount paid for firing, lights, stationery, and other expenses: the whole to be for the financial year ending the 31st March, 1903."—(Mr. Heerier.)

Labour Bureaux, etc. 1. The number of Labour Bureaux in the colony : 187. 2. The amount of salaries paid to Inspectors and other officials of the Labour Department: £4,374 (this includes amounts paid for extra clerical assistance and bonuses to police officers acting as inspectors). 3. The amount paid in rent for offices, together with the amount paid for firing, lights, stationery, and other expenses : Rent (£52 165.) and cleaning of offices (£92 45.), £145; firing and lighting, £14 lis. lid. ; expenses administering the Factories and Shops Act (advertising, legal expenses, &c), £140; stationery, £13 65.; steamer and railway fares of Inspectors and Agents, and workmen proceeding to employment,* £570; travelling-expenses of Inspectors, Agents, and others, £595 ; expenses inspecting shearers' accommodation, £173; sundry accounts, such as for typewriters, bicycles (for use of Inspectors), repairs to same, stores supplied to workmen proceeding to employment,* telephone subscriptions, &c, £260. * (lost of same recovered from wages earned.
