ORDER OF REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Tuesday, the Bth Day of July, 1902. Ordered "That a Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all Bills and petitions that may be introduced into this House affecting the waste lands of the Crown, and to report generally upon the principles and provisions which they contain, with power to confor and sit together with any similar Committee which may be appointed by the Legislative Council, and to agree to a joint or separate report; the Committee to have power to call for persons, papers, and records; three to be a quorum: the Committee to consist ot Mr. Bennet, Mr. Flatman, Mr. Gilfedder, Mr. Hardy, Mr. Hogg, Mr. Lang, Mr. McLachlan, Mr. R. Petitioneks pray that "The Egmont County Act, 1901," be amended so that the portion severed from the Waimate Biding should merge again into the Waimate Biding. No. 6.—Petition of P. McAlisteb and 85 Others, of Kawakawa. Petitioners pray for a grant of money to construct a bridge over the Waitangi Biver. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 16th July, 1902.

No. 7. —Petition of Alfred C. Yahbokough and 66 Others, of Kohukohu, Hokianga. Petitioners pray for a grant of money to metal the main road to Kohukohu and for wharf purposes. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 16th July, 1902. •

No. 25.—Petition of John J. Carruthers and 151 Others, of Turanga Creek. Petitioners pray that provision be made for making two miles of road and constructing two bridges to connect the Turanga Creek and Maraetai districts with the main road to Auckland. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for favourable consideration. 16th July, 1902.

No. 43. —Petition of S. P. de Cartebet and 18 Others, of Alfriston, Papakura Valley. Petitioners pray for a grant of £400 to open up the north-eastern portion of Papakura district. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for favourable consideration. 16th July, 1902. _____

No. 44. —Petition of Frederick W. Humphreys and 32 Others, of Avoca, Mangaru, Hobson County. Petitioners pray for two grants amounting to £1,600 to form and metal the roads in the Avoca Special Settlement. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 16th July, 1902.

Nos. 99, 100, and 101. —Petitions of John A. L. Hall and Others, V. H. Beed and Others, of Kawakawa; and Albert Morgan and Others, of Buapekapeka. Petitioners pray that the Pakaraka Estate may be purchased for close settlement. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petitions be referred to Government for consideration. 29th July, 1902.

No. 124.—Petition of Ambrose Trust, Sen., and Others, of Turanga. Petitioners pray that Petition No. 25, presented on the 3rd instant, praying that provision be made for a road and bridges to connect Turanga Creek and Maraetai districts with main road to Auckland, may be thoroughly investigated. I am directed to report that, as the statements in each are of such a conflicting nature, the Committee recommends that this petition be also referred to Government in order that a report may be obtained from the officers of the Boad Department as to the best route to be adopted 29th July, 1902.

No. 108.-—Petition of Peter Edward Oheal, Surveyor, of Auckland. Petitioner prays for payment of moneys advanced and work done in connection with the survey of Native land known as Hangapapa Block, Mokau. I am directed to report that the Committee has come to the same conclusion as that arrived at last year (vide Petition No. 189) —viz., " That Mr. Cheal has no claim against the colony " 6th August, 1902, '"

Petitionebs pray for a grant of money for the maintenance of main road between New Plymouth and Opunake. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petitions be referred to Government for consideration. 6th August, 1902.

No. 168.—Petition of T. C. Wheeleb and 54 Others, of Ellesmere, Christchurch. Pbtitioneks pray for assistance in roading lands adjoining Lake Ellesmere. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 6th August, 1902.

No. 161. —Petition of William Eobebtson, of Sandymount, Dunedin. Petitioneb prays for compensation for road-line taken and shortage of area purchased. I am directed to report that, as the matter has already been on several occasions before the Committee, and as no new facts have been adduced in the present instance, the Committee sees no reason to alter the decision previously arrived at (vide Petition No. 44, 1893) —viz., " That they have no recommendation to make." 6th August, 1902.

No. 210. —Petition of P. T. Mabtin and Others, of Taniwha, Auckland. Petitionebs pray for grant of £300 to form and metal main road between Matahuru Creek and Wairenga School. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 6th August, 1902.

No. 199.—Petition of Geobge Sellwood and Others, of Howick, Auckland. Petitionebs object to any deviation of the main road from Turanga Creek and Maraetai through Howick to Auckland. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government in order to obtain the report of the Eoads Engineer on the proposed deviation. 21st August, 1902.

No. 206.—Petition of Thomas Hedley and Others, of Waiotu, Auckland (No. 1). Petitionebs pray for grant of £300 for forming and bridging the Hukerenui South-Waiotu Valley Eoad. . I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 21st August, 1902.

No. 207. —Petition of Robebt Mackie, of Te Aroha, Auckland. Petitioneb prays for inquiry into, and compensation for, loss of land at Te Aroha. I am directed to report that the Committee, having made inquiries, is satisfied petitioner has no claim to consideration. 21st August, 1902.

No. 212. —Petition of Robebt Page and Others, of Waimamaku, Auckland. Petitionbes pray for road to give access to cheese and butter factory at Waimamaku. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 21st August, 1902. .

No. 214. —Petition of Thomas Hedley and Others, of Waiotu, Auckland (No. 2). Petitioners ask for grant for road purposes through certain sections in Block 11., Hukerenui Survey District. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 21st August, 1902.

No. 216.—Petition of Joseph Baeugh and Others, of Cambridge, Auckland. Petitionees pray for subsidy towards building a high-level bridge at Cambridge. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 21st August, 1902.

No. 246.—Petition of Geobge A. Wilson and Others, of Hunua, Auckland. Petitionebs pray that provision be made for completing road from Otau Block to railway. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 21st August, 1902.

No. 254. —Petition of M. M. Massey and Others, of Waipu, Auckland. Petitioners pray for completion of road between the settlements of Waipu, Mangawai, and Hakaru. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 21st August, 1902. ■

No. 257. —Petition of Edward Habnett and Others, of Hukerenui, Auckland. Petitioners pray for a grant of £300 to form a road to Hukerenui Eailway-station. I am directed to report that the Committee jecommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 21st August, 1902.

No. 258. —Petition of William Hunter and Others, of Horse Terrace, Upper Matakitaki. Petitioners pray for a grant of £300 towards completing road from Horse Terrace to Matakitaki Plain. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 21st August, 1902.

No. 270.—Petition of William Davidson and Others, of Tapanui, Otago. Petitioners pray that 2,000 acres of land on Eun 140b, Tapanui, be opened for close settlement. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 21st August, 1902.

No. 113. —Petition of Alexander Campbell, of Dunedin. Petitioner prays for relief in respect of land sold by Government at Table Hill. I am directed to report chat petitioner states that in 1869 and 1870 he and his deceased brother leased from the Provincial Government of Otago certain land at Table Hill, and that at the expiry of their lease in 1876 and 1877, through the negligence of their solicitor, they lost their opportunity of purchasing the property, and the land was sold by the Crown. The profit thus lost appears to have amounted to £911. Your Committee considers petitioner has no legal claim, but they recommend that his petition be referred to Government for consideration. 27th August, 1902.

No. 315.—Petition of Joseph Healby, of Whakatane. Petitioner prays for payment of money due for work done on Ruatoki-Bangitaiki Eoad. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Public Petitions A to L Committee for consideration. 27th August, 1902.

No. 322. —Petition of Maurice Harding and Others, of Horehore, Mititai, Auckland. Petitioners pray for grant of £500 towards formation of Mititai-Tokatoka Eoad. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 27th August, 1902.

No. 323. —Petition of William Chadwin and Others, of Maungaturoto, Auckland. Petitioners pray for grant of £300 for improvement of Finlayson's Eoad, Wairau Biding, Otamatea County. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 27th August, 1902.

No. 211. —Petition of Margaret Giesen, of Feilding. Petitioner prays for relief under the Land Act. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 2nd September, 1902.

Nos. 284 and 285. —Petitions of John Gould and Albert John Gould, of Feilding. Petitioners pray for refund of £12 10s. and £6 ss. paid on Sections 4 and 11, Block VIII., Waimarino, Gladstone Small-farms Association, respectively. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petitions be referred to Government for favourable consideration, as was done in similar cases last year. 10th September, 1902.

Nos. 329, 330, 331, 353, and 358.—Petitions of W. G. Drever and Others, W. Morgan and Others, H. A. Pyke and Others, Joseph Dobson and Others, and L. Gardiner and Others, of Kaurihohore, &c. Petitioners pray that the Puhipuhi State Forest may be opened to gum-diggers. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petitions be referred to Government for consideration. 10th September, 1902.

I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Goldfields and Mines Committee for consideration. 10th September, 1902.

No. 345. —Petition of H. J. Davis and Others, of Lawrence. Petitioneks pray that the Government acquire the Greenfield Estate for'close settlement. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for favourable consideration. 10th September, 1902.

No. 352.—Petition of J. C. Connolly and Others, of Kaeo. Petitioners pray that a bridge be erected over the Waitangi on the road from Kaeo to Kawakawa. I am directed to report that 'the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 10th September, 1902. _____

No. 371. —Petition of N. K. MacDiabmid and Others, of New Plymouth. Petitioners pray that section 18 of the " The Reserves and other Lands Sale, Disposal, and Enabling and Public Bodies Empowering Act, 1901," be amended so as to place them in the same position in regard to certain reserves as before the passing of the said Act. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 10th September, 1902.

No. 386. —Petition of S. A. Waite and Others, of Waipuna, Whangamarino. Petitioners pray that a sum be placed on the estimates for the Waipuna Valley Eoad. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for favourable consideration. 10th September, 1902.

No. 444.—Petition of W. A. Banks and Others, of Loburn, Christchurch. Petitioners claim that the Waimakariri-Ashley Water-supply Board and the Waipara, Kowai, Ashley, Eyreton, and West Eyreton Eoad Boards, in the Ashley County, have a right to one-third of the proceeds from the sale of certain land by the Midland Eailway Company. I am directed to report that, having heard the evidence of Mr. W. A. Banks, Chairman, Ashley Road Boad; Mr. John O'Halloran, Chairman of conference of local bodies on "thirds" ; and Mr. M. J. Dixon, Chairman, Water-supply Board ; and having made full inquiries into the claims of the local bodies petitioning, and also the roading of the Midland Eailway lands sold by the company, your Committee is of opinion that there is no necessity for a Commission of inquiry as requested by the petitioners, as, in the opinion of your Committee, the petitioners have no claim against the colony. 26th September, 1902.

No. 409. —Petition of James Bishop, of Eotorua. Petitioner prays for inquiry and compensation regarding land transactions at Eotorua. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to Government for consideration. 26th September, 1902.
