POLICE PROVIDENT FUND: REPORT OF THE BOARD OF ADMINISTRATION FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31st MARCH, 1901.
Laid before Parliament in pursuance of Section 25 (Subsection 5) of " The Police Provident Fund Act, 1899."
The Board have to report that during the year ended 31st March last one Inspector, three sergeants, and six constables were retired under the Act and placed on the fund. The particulars of those retired are as follows: —
The death of ex-Inspector Thomas Broham, who was retired from the Force on the 28th February, 1900, with a life-allowance of £240 per annum, occurred on the 20th December last. There were on the 31st March last eleven members on the fund—viz., one ex-Inspector, three ex-sergeants, and seven ex-constables —their aggregate annual allowance being £1,044 7s. 4d. The balance-sheet and statement of receipts and disbursements as required by section 25 of the Act are hereto annexed, from which it will be seen that on the 31st March there was a balance to the credit of the fund of £9,185 12s. 4d., being an increase of £5,928 14s. lid. on the amount at the corresponding date of the preceding year. This very prosperous condition of the fund is mainly attributable to many of the members who are eligible to retire not thus far having availed themselves of their right to do so. The fund still gives general satisfaction to the Force, although many members feel that the contribution they are called upon to make is rather heavy. The time, however, for considering the question of a reduction in the contributions or an increase in the benefits has not yet arrived. James McGowan, Wellington, May, 1901. Chairman of the Board of Administration.
