INDUSTRIAL CONCILIATION AND ARBITRATION BOARDS (PARTICULARS RELATIVE TO).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 19th September, 1900. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing — (1) The number of Conciliation Boards elected in the colony since the passing of ' The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1894'; (2) the total cost of all such elections ; (3) the number of disputes referred to Conciliation Boards, and the trades and industries involved ; (4) the number of disputes in which their awards were agreed to by both parties to such disputes ; (5) the number of disputes in which the parties failed to agree to such awards; (6) the scale of fees paid to Chairmen and members of the Conciliation Boards for their services, and the total sum of suoh payments to date ; (7) the scale of payments for travelling and other expenses, and the total sum of such payments; (8) the number of persons to whom such payments have been made ; (9) the total cost of administering the Act in so far as Conciliation Boards are concerned."—(Mr. Gbaham.)

Number of disputes referred to Conciliation Boards, 87. Trades and industries involved : Bootmakers, butchers, bakers, carpenters, coachbuilders, curriers, coal-miners, carters, drivers, engineers, furniture trades, gold-miners, grocers' assistants, painters, plumbers, printers, saddlers, seamen, tailors and tailoresses, tinsmiths, tramway-drivers, and wharf-labourers. 4. Number of disputes in which recommendations were agreed to by both parties, 29; and 3 agreed to by some parties only. 5. Number of disputes in which parties failed to agree to recommendations, 53; and 3 agreed to by some parties only. (The other two cases were dropped during proceedings.) 6. Scale of fees paid to Chairmen and members of Conciliation Boards, £1 Is. per day to each member when sitting at the town in which he resides, and £1 10s. when at any other place. Total sum of fees to 31st March, 1900, £2,444 lis. 7. The scale of payments for travelling and other expenses : Actual expenses only allowed; total sum of such payments, £121 18s. 7d. 8. The number of persons to whom such payments have been made, 45. 9. The total cost of administering the Act in so far as Conciliation Boards are concerned, £2,751 16s. Id.
