Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing—(l) The number of men appointed to the Permanent Artillery from the Ist January, 1880, to the Ist January, 1897, both dates inclusive; (2) tho districts in which such persons were residing at the date of their appointment; (3) the names of persons transferred from tho Permanent Artillery to the Police Forco during tho above-mentioned period, also the length of service previous to their transfer to the Police Force." —(Rt. Number of men appointed to the above Force from the Ist January, 1880, to the 31st August, 1886, when the Force was formed into the Permanent Militia and Police (both dates inclusive) ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 1,006 2. 162 were enrolled in Christchurch, 56 in Taranaki, 41 in Dunedin, 10 at the Thames, and the remainder at the Armed Constabulary Depot, Wellington. There is not sufficient information to show their previous places of residence. In many instances they were recent arrivals in the colony. 3. The names of persons transferred from the Field Force to the Police Branch of the Armed Constabulary during the above-mentioned period, and the length of service previous to their transfer to the Police Branch, are shown on the attached list.
