EDUCATION: THE COSTLEY TRAINING INSTITUTION (REPORT OF). [In continuation of E.-3a, 1894.]

The annual meeting of the friends of the Costley Training Institution was held at the institution, Bichmond Eoad, Auckland, on the evening of Thursday, the 17th January, 1895. In the absence of Mr W C. Daldy (Chairman of Trustees) Colonel Haultain presided. The annual report for the year ending 31st December, 1894, was read. This stated that since the death of Mr Costley their funds have been increased by a bequest under the will of the late Miss Eebecca Hodge amounting to £672, and they would be only too pleased to receive from time to time donations of a similar kind, and could assure intending donors that the same care which has been observed in obtaining sound investment for the present capital would be exercised in regard to any further bequests. Since commencing operations they had not lost £1 of interest, and every property of which they are mortgagees was of value far in excess of the amount lent upon it. During the year the domestic arrangements had been carried out, thanks to the energy and capability of the managers, Mr and Mrs. Ramsay to their entire satisfaction. The report expressed obligations to Dr Knight for his gratuitous professional assistance, and to Mr E. B. Shalders for kindly attending and giving the boys words of encouragement, The general health of the inmates has been above the average. Every inmate earning wages, however small, has an account opened in the Auckland Savings-bank, in which is placed a share of the earnings, and when by effluxion of time such inmate leaves the institution the trustees have made it a rule to hand the sum at credit to each one. In several instances upwards of £50 have been paid over thus, with the trade he has learned, placing the recipient at the threshold of his business life in possession of means towards independence. At present they had on the roll nine girls and thirty-one boys. All the girls except one, who was not in good health, were employed. Of these, three were in factories and three boarded out. Eleven boys are at school, eight at trades, one at sea, and eleven in country situations. The trustees were thankful to be able to state that since the institution opened no inmate has died, and only in a few cases has there been any serious illness, and they looked forward by the blessing of God to a prosperous and happy year Eecbipts and Expenditube for the Tbae ending 31st December, 1894.
