APPOINTMENT OF MR. JUSTICE EDWARDS (COST OF PROCEEDINGS RE).

- Return to an Order of the House of representatives, dated 10th September, 1892. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the total cost to the State of the recent proceedings in the Court of Appeal in respect of the appointment of Mr. Justice Edwards, or connected therewith, including preliminary opinions as to the validity of the appointment, and any opinions obtained from counsel subsequently to the decision of the Court of Appeal, and including as well the cost of the defence as the costs of the prosecution, distinguishing—(l) the several sums paid to counsel, stating the services in respect of which such sums have been paid, and the names of the counsel to whom the same have been paid; ,(2) the sums paid to Mr. H. B. Vogel, stating the services for which such sums have been paid, and whether such sums include any payment in respect to the abortive proceedings commenced by him in the name of one Aldridge, a felon ; (3) the costs paid to the Crown Solicitor, and to the solicitors for the defendant, other than for counsel's fees, stating separately the amounts paid to each, and how much of such amounts is for disbursements ; (4) the cost of reporting and transcribing the report of the proceedings before the Court of Appeal; (5) cost of passages of Hansard reporters ; (6) cost of printing report of proceedings before the Court of Appeal, and of the statement of case, affidavits, &c, presented to the Court."—(Mr. Fishee.)
