Sess. 11.—1887. NEW ZEALAND.
LICENSING DISTRICTS, LICENSES ISSUED, AND BREWERIES (RETURN OF THE NUMBER OF) IN THE COLONY, FOR THE YEAR 1886.
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 18th May, 1887. Ordered, "That a return be laid before this House containing, as far as possible, the following information: (1) The total number of licensing districts in the colony ; (2) the number of licenses issued in each provincial district during the year 1886, distinguishing the several sorts of license; (3) the number of applications for licenses refused in each provincial district during the year, distinguishing new applications from renewals, and giving the ground of refusal m each case where known ; (4) the number of breweries in each provincial district, and the fees, if any, paid by their owners—(a) the number of gallons brewed in each provincial district, (6) the amount of duty paid in each provincial district, (c) the number of persons in each district engaged in the actual manufacture of beer."—(Mr. Pulton.)

Hawko's Bay—2, houses not required; 3, against local-option vote ;2, reason not known. Wellington— 2, houses not required ;4, reason not known. Nelson—3, applications made at wrong time ;3, against local-option vote. Canterbury—4, reason not known; 1, applicant unsuitable. Otago—l3, houses not required ;4, against local-option vote :1, application withdrawn. Westland— 5, houses not required ;1, cancelled at applicant's request. Total, 56.
