EDUCATION: THE UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO. [In Continuation of E.-6, 1886.]

In compliance with "The Otago University Ordinance, 1869," I have the honour to forward to your Excellency the following report of the proceedings of the University for the year ending the 31st March, 1887 : — The«session, which commenced on the Ist May, was attended by 140 students, of whom 90 have matriculated. Levi, with second-class honours in mental science. LL.B. Degeee.—J. G. Findlay and W. A. Stout. B.A. Degeee.—P. B. Allen, J. B. Montgomery, J. E. Don, E. Donald, Annie Forbes, J. Methven, J. A. Valentine, W. Mill, G. A. Simmers, W. E. Spencer, and A. Hendry. Soholaeships.—Senior scholarships have been awarded to Annie Forbes in Latin and English, and G. A. Simmers in natural science. The following are recorded as having passed examinations towards the degree of LL.B. : T. K. Sidey, 8.A., second examination ; E. McNab, M.A., second examination; F. E. Baume, first examination. The following are recorded as having passed the first section of the examination for the degree of B.A. : J. L. Eield, J. N. Waddell, Mary Montgomery, Isabella Duncan, Marion Ferguson, Flora Allan, P. G. Morgan, and F. E. Baume. During the year three members of Council have been removed by death, viz., Messrs. John Hyde Harris, John Bathgate, M.L.C., and James Macandrew, M.H.R., all of whom rendered good service to the University, but especially Mr. Macandrew, to whom belongs the honour of being its chief founder. It is with satisfaction the Council reports that the Government has filled two of the vacant seats by the appointment of Messrs. George Gray Eussell and John McLean. Chaib op Mathematics.—The chair of mathematics, which became vacant by the appointment of Professor Shand to the chair of natural philosophy recently founded, has been filled by the election of Mr. F. B. Gibbons, M.A., Fellow of Caius College, Cambridge, and Second Wrangler, from a list of fifty-eight candidates. I—B. 6.

Medical School.—The Council has been fortunate in securing for the medical school the services of Dr. Lindo Ferguson, F.8.C.5.1., &c, as lecturer on diseases of the eye. This school has now a staff of ten teachers attached to it, exclusive of the clinical staff at the hospital. School op Mines.—The Council has much pleasure in reporting that, in consequence of the renewal of the subsidy to the School of Mines, it has been able to complete its staff by the appointment of Mr. Walter Cutten as lecturer in applied mechanics, Mr. L. O. Beale, jun., C.E., as lecturer on the theory and practice of land and mining surveying,- and Mr. George J. Binns, F.G.S., as lecturer on general geology. The Council cherishes the hope that students anxious to qualify as mining inspectors and engineers will avail themselves of the instruction now placed within their reach. Boyal Chaetee.—The Council, after very full consideration, has, on the motion of the late Mr. Macandrew, M.H.E., unanimously resolved to renew its application for a Eoyal charter; and it expects to be able at an early period to place in the hands of your Excellency the petition of the Council for transmission to Her Majesty. Museum. —The Council reports that several important additions have been made to the collections iti the museum during the year, and that the greater portion of the collection illustrative; of New Zealand zoology sent to the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London has been purchased by the Trustees of the British Museum for the Natural History Museum, South Kensington. The biological classes and the Otago Institute are provided with accommodation in the building.
