1885. NEW ZEALAND.

EDUCATION: THE AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. [In Continuation of E.-8., 1884.]

Presented in pursuance of Section 25 of " The Auckland University College Act, 1882."

The Chairman to the Hon. the Minister of Education. Sir,— In compliance with the 25th section of " The Auckland University College Act, 1882," the Council has the honour of making the following report : —■ 1. The Auckland University College being still destitute of a building or site suitable or permanently appropriated, the lectures and other instruction continue to be given in premises which are not contiguous to each other, and are defective. 2. In pursuance of." The Auckland University College Act, 1882," section 8, a ballot by lot was taken on the 21st May, 1884, for the purpose of determining what members of the College Council should then retire from being members thereof, and the following were allotted to retire: Of the members elected by the members of the General Assembly resident in the Provincial District of Auckland, the Eight Eev. William Garden Cowie, D.D., the Anglican Bishop of Auckland; of the members appointed by the Governor in Council, the Honourable Colonel Theodore Minet Haultain; and of the members appointed by the Governor in Council pending the time when there shall be thirty graduates of the University of New Zealand having their names on the college register, the Honourable Sir George Maurice O'Eorke, 8.A., the Speaker of the House of Bepresentatives. Subsequently these three gentlemen were severally elected and roappointed to be members of the College Council for the ensuing three years. 3. On the 19th July Sir G. Maurice O'Eorke was re-elected to be Chairman of the College Council during the ensuing twelve months. 4. On the 11th October the Auckland Board of Education notified to the College Council that Mr. Hobbs, M.H.E., had ceased to be Chairman of that Board, and that Mr. Samuel Luke had been elected. Chairman. The ex officio members of the College Council are the Mayor of the City of Auckland (Mr. William Eichard Waddell) and the Chairman of the Auckland Board of Education. 5. On the 21st May, 1884, being the first anniversary of the opening of the college, the annual meeting of the college was held in the Choral Hall; on which occasion His Excellency the Governor, Sir William F. Drummond Jervois, G.C.M.G., C.8., was pleased to preside; and the annual address was delivered by Professor Thomas, M.A., F.L.S., the Chairman of the Professorial Board. 6. In August, 1884, an addition to the house in Eden Street, at present occupied by the college, was made for the purpose of a chemical laboratory. It has since been found requisite, for the purpose of a biological laboratory, to make another and similar addition. 7. A valuable present of books of literature and science, numbering 300 volumes, has been sent to the college by Messrs. Macmillan and Co., the eminent publishers in London. 8. In addition to the usual courses of lectures special courses adapted to the requirements of artisans have been delivered. These lectures have been numerously attended and highly appreciated. 9. The total number of persons who attended lectures of this college in the year 1883 was 95. In 1884 the number was 175, viz., graduates who attended term lectures, 2 ; undergraduates who attended term lectures, 31; non-matriculated students who attended term lectures, 63 : total who attended term lectures, 96; persons other than the above who attended the lectures for artisans, 79. The total number of students connected with the college in 1884 was 201, viz., persons who attended lectures, 175 ; undergraduates exempted from attendance at lectures, 26. 10. The number of graduates of the University of New Zealand whose names are on the college register, and who are therefore entitled to vote in the election of members of the College Council, is at present 18. Of this number, 8 are ad eundem gradum.

11. No payments other than thejfees, which are perquisites of the lecturers and examiners, are made to the college by the students. 12. The College Council expends £100 per annum in scholarships, and two (Science) scholarships, each of £100 per annum, entitled the Sinclair and Gillies Scholarships, have been endowed by Mr. Justice Gillies. 13.
