EDUCATION. THE OTAGO UNIVERSITY. [In continuation of E.-6. 1884.]

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.

The Chancellor to His Excellency the Governor. Sir, — University of Otago, 30th April, 1885. In compliance with " The Otago University Ordinance, 1869," I have the honour to forward to your Excellency the following report of the proceedings of the University for the year ending the 31st March, 1885 :— The session which commenced on the Ist of May was attended by 120 students, of whom 65 have matriculated. The attendance on the several classes was as follows: — 1883. 1884. 1883. 1884. Fitzgerald, Caroline Freeman, J. J. Hay, D. Munro, and T. K. Sidey—passed the final examination for the B.A. degree; and J. A. Asher, J. E. Dow, W. Fitzgerald, Mary J. Fraser, A. Hendry, P. Lovi, C. Little, W. Macalister, J. Waddell Smith, Marion Steele, W. E. Spencer, and G. Williamson passed the first section of that degree. M.A. Degree.—E. McNab, second-class honours in mathematics and mathematical physics. LL.B. Degree.—J. G. Findlay passed the first section of that degree. Senior Scholarship.—J. J. Hay, in mathematics. At the tercentenary celebration of the University of Edinburgh, which drew to the Scottish capital large numbers of the leading educationists of Europe, the United States, and the colonies, this University was fitly represented by Mr. A. C. Strode, who during many years rendered faithful service as a member of the Council and Honorary Treasurer. The resignation by Mr. Strode of his seat in the Council, in consequence of his continued absence from the colony, was received with regret. The Council recorded thanks to him for his long services. The vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. Strode was filled by the appointment of Mr. Macandrew, M.H.E., who has always taken the deepest interest in the University. The Council has pleasure in stating that Mr. James Fulton, M.H.E., a member of the Council, laid the foundation of a Taieri Scholarship, open to both sexes, by giving for this purpose one hundred guineas. When the sum necessary to complete it has been contributed the University will have three scholarships for the promotion of general culture. The School of Mines, which was founded several years ago, received a subsidy from the Government of £500 a year, and Professor Ulrich was appointed Director. Some lecturers required to complete the staff have not been appointed in consequence of the withdrawal of the subsidy. The Council is, however, ready to increase the usefulness of the school as soon as the subsidy has been, restored.

E.—6.

Dr. Black, Professor of Chemistry, with the approval of the Council, devoted the long vacation to the delivery of lectures bearing on the mining industry in several of the mining districts of the colony. The Council has heard with satisfaction from the Minister of Mines and others that these lectures have been much appreciated. The Council has been informed that the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Otago and Southland has under consideration, the immediate establishment of a Chair of Natural Philosophy in the University. This would form a fitting crown to the Chairs of Mental and Moral Philosophy and English Language and Literature which this Church has already established. The Council having felt constrained to accept the surrender of the lease of the Barewood Eun, it was in due course re-leased, at public auction, at a rental of £2,500, being a loss to the University of £425 per annum. The abstract of accounts, showing the income and expenditure of the University for the year ending 31st March, 1885, is appended to this report. I have, &c, D. M. Stuaet, D.D., His Excellency Sir W. F. Drummond Jervois, G.C.M.G., &c, Chancellor. Governor of New Zealand.
