REWI'S INVITATION TO HIS EXCELLENCY (PAPERS RESPECTING).
Presented to loth Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.
No. 1. Copt of Letter from Eewi to His Excellency the Governor. To Governor Normanby,— Puniu, 28th March, 1878. I was very desirous to see you when you came here ; but it cannot now be helped. I will now simply send you greetings, the person who has come from the Queen. Should you return to these parts, I will be glad to meet you at Orakau. From Manga Eewi Maniapoto.
No. 2. His Excellency the "Goveenor to Eewi. Friend,— Auckland, 3rd April, 1878. Salutations to you. I have received your letter, in which you express regret at not having seen me during my recent visit to Waikato, and hope that when I come again at some future period I will come and see you at Orakau. Friend, this is my reply to you : I regret that, on account of the shortness of the time at my disposal, you had not an opportunity of seeing me during my visit, for I would have been glad to have seen a chief whose reputation has reached me long ago ; nevertheless, Sir George Grey, the head of my Government, and Mr. Sheehan, my Native Minister, are shortly to see you, and no doubt then anything which you might have said to me if we had met will be listened to by them with due attention. I trust that the meeting which is about to take place will result in the final establishment of cordial and peaceful relations between the Maoris and Europeans in this Island. As to your request that I should see you at Orakau if I return again to Waikato, my answer is that I thank you for your invitation. I have referred your letter to my Ministers, and I shall be quite willing, at any time when they may think it desirable in the public interest, to see you or any other of the Maori chiefs of this Island.
