A.—Ba,

1876. NEW ZEALAND.

ACCEPTANCE OF APPOINTMENT OF AGENT-GENERAL BY THE HON. SIR J. VOGEL, K.C.M.G., (CORRESPONDENCE RELATIVE TO THE).

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.

No. 1. The Hon. the Peemiee to the Hon. Sir J. Vogel. Sib, — General Government Offices, "Wellington, 6th September, 1876. The office of Agent-General having become vacant through the lamented death of the late Dr. Featherston, the Government feel it of great importance that it should be at once and efficiently filled. Tour well-known zeal and ability, and the great services you have rendered to the colony, both here and in England, point you out, in the opinion of the Government, as peculiarly fitted to discharge the high duties of the office; and I therefore have great pleasure in offering it to you for your acceptance. The Government understand that you would not be disposed to accept the appointment for more than a limited time; and this will meet the views of the Government, as they do not wish to make a definite appointment for more than a year, in order that there may be no obstacle to change being made in the constitution of the office, should it be advisable. "Without wishing inconveniently to hurry your departure in the event of your acceptance of the office, the Government think it of great importance that you should lose no time in assuming the duties of the office. The appointment will be upon the same terms, conditions, and emoluments as those enjoyed by the late Dr. Featherston. I have, &c, The Hon. Sir Julius Yogel, K.C.M.G. H. A. Atkinson.

No. 2. The Hon. Sir J. Vogel to the Hon. the Peemiee. Sib ,— Wellington, 9th September, 1876. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of September 6th, in which you offer for my acceptance the office of Agent-General. 2. I have to thank you for the kind terms in which you express yourself concerning my ability to fill the office. 3. Tou rightly understand my desire not to bind myself beyond a limited time. 4. In notifying to you my acceptance of the appointment on the terms you propose, I hope you will allow me to observe that only the conviction that I shall be able to discharge its duties to the satisfaction of the Government, and that I shall be able to be of service to the colony, induces me to take it. I have, &c, The Hon. the Premier. Julius Vogel.

By Authority: Geobge Didsbuey, Government Printer, Wellington.—lB76. Price 3d.]
