Out of this rural laud, most probably town and suburban sections will be taken as the surveys progress, and new settlements are formed, and the country opened up by roads. b The acreage in Part I., for the Province of Nelson, is exclusive of the Public Reserves, and the large Buller Coal Reserve. c ReconnuUance surveys of 5,939,000 acres of the above have been executed. d This amount includes all unpurchased land of which the trigonometrical and topographical survey has been completed. e Free selection before survey. /The acreage of Public Reserves is included in the area given in Part III. g Of the unsurveyed town lands, 9,438 acres are within hundreds. Of the unsurveyed rnral land, 280,000 acres are within hundreds. Of the rural surveyed land, about 90,000 acres are within hundreds. h In addition to the above, there are also ready for sale and settlement partially surveyed lands, to the extent of 107,617 acres. i Although not in a position to be returned as " completed," it should be understood that the surveys of a large proportion of the area noted in this column are in a state considerably advanced towards completion. j In the Auckland Province, there are about 56,000 acres of " surplus lands " reverting to the Crown from old land claims, which are not included in this Return. Or. S. COOPEB, Acting for Secretary for Crown Lands.
