RESOLUTIONS OF THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL OF OTAGO RELATING TO REGULATION OF ELECTIONS ACT AND DUTY ON GOLD.
PRESENTED TO BOTH HOUSES OP THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, BY COMMAND
OF HIS EXCELLENCY.

Eesolution relative to Behitlation op Elections Act. " That this Council is of opinion that the Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand of 1858, intituled ' An Act to make provision for the regulation and conduct of Elections of Members of the House of Eepresentatives' requires amendment, inasmuch as the present system of open voting is inexpedient and opposed to the fair exercise of electoral rights, and that vote by ballot should be substituted in lieu of the procedure prescribed by the said Act; and that an Address be presented to His Honor the Superintendent requesting him to take steps to lay this Eesolution before the General Assembly, and to cause a Bill to be introduced therein to give effect to the same." Passed the Provincial Council May 23rd, 1367. (Signed) "William H. Eeynolds, (Signed) Chas. Smith, Speaker. Clerk of Council.
Eesolution relative to Duty on Gold. " That this Council is of opinion that Gold Mining being a permanent industry, is beneficial to the Province of Otago and New Zealand generally, and should, be encouraged; and in order to give every facility to the investment of capital and the working of inferior auriferous ground, the time has arrived when the duty on gold should be reduced at the rate of sixpence per ounce per annum until the duty shall be abolished; and that a respectful Address be presented to His Honor the Superintendent requesting him to forward this Eesolution to the General Assembly with the view of giving effect thereto."
