The Chief Judge, Native Land Court, to the Hon. the Native Minister. Native Land Court Office, Sin,— Auckland, Ist August, 1566. I gather from the reports of the debates in the House of Representatives on the question of Separation, published in the Sea Zealand Herald newspaper, that Mr. Whitaker in his speech stated that the notices which he received of the sittings of the Native Land Court at Hokianga were too short to permit him properly to protect the interests of the Crown. I read this with great surprise, for I have had many conversations with Mr. Whitaker about these Courts, and he never gave expression to the slightest hint that longer notices would be desired by him. I have, the honor to enclose a Return of all the sittings of the Court that have hitherto been fixed for Hokiauga and its neighbourhood, showing the dates on which they were held, and the dates on which the notices were delivered at the office of His Honor the Superintendent of Auckland.
