G— No. 7,

PETITION OF THE NELSON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, PRAYING FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SMALL DEBTS COURT.

PRESENTED TO HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, SEPTEMBER Ist, 1862, AND ORDERED TO BE PRINTED.

To the Honourable the House of Representatives. The respectful Petition of the Nelson Chamber of Commerce:— Sheweth— That your Petitioners, in common with the inhabitants of the Province of Nelson generally, have for a long time past been subjected to much loss and inconvenience in consequence of the absence of any means for the recovery of debts between £20 and £100 otherwise than by action in the Supreme Court. Your Petitioners therefore pray that your Honourable House will, during its present Session, pass measures providing for the recovery of sums within the limits above-named, by a speedy, simple, and inexpensive process, either by the extension of the jurisdiction of the Resident Magistrate's Court; by the revival of the Sittings of the District Court, unencumbered by the late complicated rules, or by such other means as may appear to your Honourable House to be best adapted for the purpose. And your Petitioners will ever pray. Signed on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, Oswald Curtis, Chairman. Nelson Chamber of Commerce, August 27th, 1862.
