RETURNS RELATIVE TO THE POSTAL SERVICE

"A RETURN of the total number of LETTEES and the total number of NEWSPAPERS "forwarded during the Year ended 31st December, 1857, by the Direct Mail between Wei- " lington and Nelson via the Wairau. Also, of the amount of Postage collected on those " Letters and Newspapers for account of the General Government. Also, of the cost incurred "by the General Government on account of this Mail during the above period. Totals : Letters, 27,900 ; Newspapers and other Printed Papers : 11,479 ; Amount of Postage collected £221 Is. Bd. ; Cost of the Mail: £656 17s. 6d. b W. COEBETT, Postmaster.
