PUBLIC WORKS

REORGANISATION SCHEME WAIKATO DISTRICT ENLARGED Hamilton is to be one of six major centres in the reorganisation of the Public Works Department, the six districts being Auckland, Waikato, East Coast, Wellington (including part of the Souh Island), Canterbury and Otago (including Southland). The boundaries of these districts have not yet \een fixed. The Depari\ent is to be subdivided into fo\j* main divisions—housing, archite<\iral, engineering and administrative—\and there is to be a separate hydro-electricity department. It is anticipated that a start will be made to put the new organisation into operation next month, but it will probably be some months before it is fully established. There have already been some staff changes. The district engineer at Auckland, Mr O. G. Thornton, has been transferred to Hamilton, to take charge of the greatly-enlarged Waikato district, and he will be succeeded in Auckland by Mr R. H. Packwood, who was engineer for the department at Whangarei before he went overseas with the Second Echelon. In the meantime, Mr T. C. V. Rabone, assistant-district engineer, is acting as district engineer at Auckland.
