TRAFFIC OFFENCES

SPEEDING AND NEGLIGENCE As a sequel to speeding along River Road, Claudelands, on April 5, Philip Adolphus Jennings, taxi driver, was fined £1 in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M. Mr J. F. Strang said Jennings had two passengers to catch the train when a third passenger was picked up for Hamilton East. The driver had thought all three were going to the train, and as there was very little time when he found the actual position he hurried along, only to experience a skid at the corner of Oakley Avenue. The car upset, but nobody was hurt He added that the police would probably not have heard anything about the matter but for one of the passengers later writing to the police inquiring the result of any police action. Senior-Sergeant H. F. Coddington, who prosecuted, said that after hearing counsel’s statement he was agreeable to withdrawing the second charge, which related to failure to report the accident. The magistrate consented, and imposed a fine of £1 on the first charge only. For negligence in handling his car on June 22 in Victoria Street, Herbert Leslie Cogswell (Mr F. D. Robertshaw) was fined £1 with costs. On a second charge of failing to give his name and address in connection with the negligence he was convicted and ordered to pay costs only. It was stated that Cogswell was backing his car from the kerb when he struck another car. Not much damage was done but defendant, after refusing to give his name, reported the trouble next day to the insuring company. The magistrate held that Cogswell was negligent in backing out when there was not room to do so.
