ANNUAL PIG FAIR

COMBINED BREEDERS’ SALE Although values were sometimes not up to expectations, there was steady competition for all top quality pigs at the 12th annual Waikato combined pig breeders’ sale in the pig selling pavilion at the Claudelands Showgrounds yesterday. Altogether 250 entries were forward, grade sows usually meeting with better competition than the pedigrees. Prior to the auction of the pedigree pigs, an inspection was carried out by a committee representative of the South Auckland branch of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association and comprising Messrs R. Chilcott, C. Mexted and O. Barton. A member of the committee stated that the quality of the pigs compared very favourably with previous years and In some cases showed an Improvement. The sale was conducted by the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Messrs G. W. Vercoe ,and Company, Messrs Dalgety and Company and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. Top Price of 30 gna. Top price or the day was 3 0 gns., this figure being given by South Island buyers, Messrs Chapman and Paulin, for an outstanding Berkshire sow sold on account of Mr A. T. Rogers, of N'garuawahia. Other good Berkshire sows made from 15 to 18 gns., smaller descriptions realising from 10 to 1 i gns. A Tamworth sow from Mr Rogers sold to Mr G. CufT, or Ohaupo, at IS gns., while up to 17 gns. was obtained for those from Mr w. M. Wardrop, of Tauranga. Top quality Tamworth sows sold from 16 to 18 gns. and others from 12 to 14 gns. A Large Black sow from Mr W. J. Robinson, of Te Kowhai, sold to a bid of 2 0 gns. Best Large Black sows were quoted from 18 to 20 gns., and from ll to 14 gns. was given lor smaller sorts. Good Tamworth boars made from 10 to 12 gns. airfl smaller sorts from 7 to 9 gns. Large White boars realised from 7 to 12 gns. Extra choice grade sows sold to bids usually ranging from £ll 10s to £l2 10s, while good descriptions sold from £lO to £ll, and smaller from £5 to £7 10s. One outstanding Berkshire grade sow, 3old on account ol' Miss G. Fisher, of Pukerimu, made £l9, one of the highest figures yet realised for a grade sow in the Waikato.
