£loo FINE IMPOSED

DUNEDIN BOOKMAKER THIRD TIME BEFORE COURT DUNEDIN. Friday “It is difficult to deal with cases of this nature at the present time owing to the somewhat divergent sentences passed,” said»Mr H. M. Bundle, S.M., irf the Police Court in fining Samuel Hartley, aged 49, who was described as a clerk, the maximum penalty of £IOO on a charge of keeping a common gaming house. Chief Detective Hall said several betting sheets and slips were found recording 59 bets on races from Auckland to Gore, totalling £74 under 23 different nom-de-plumes. He also had 23 double charts and two “picks" cards. He had been before the Court on two previous occasions for bookmaking, having been fined £125 on the last occasion. Counsel said that at the time the premises were raided practically all the betting for the day had been lodged and the £74 did not suggest that defendant was in a big way. The magistrate fixed immediate default at two months’ imprisonment
