LUFTWAFFE’S WEAKNESS
DESTRUCTION BY ALLIES (Received October 2, 1 p.m.) • LONDON, October 1. The Luftwaffe in central Europe is apparently on the way out, for during September the miserable total of 14 fighters were sent up to oppose the bombing operations from Italy. The 14 German aircraft were destroyed. One factor in the marked decline of enemy opposition is that Italy-based aircraft accounted for 1003 enemy aircraft destroyed in the air and 886 on the ground in the period from July to September, but the transfer of fighters to the west may be another factor. Canadian Mosquitos flew at ten feet to blitz two airfields in the Munich area last evening. They destroyed three fighters and damaged others.
Two Mosquitos, after shooting down a Focke-Wulf 190 as it was approaching one airfield, tore across both airfields, raking parked aircraft with cannon and machine-gun fire. Beaufighters from the eastern Mediterranean bases continue to take their toll of enemy aircraft employed in evacuating personnel and supplies from the Aegean Islands, states the Middle East Air Force Headquarters. On Saturday night a Domier 24 was shot down, bringing up to 12 the total of enemy aircraft destroyed by Beaufighters in five consective nights.
