GERMAN VERSION OF BATTLE GRIM STRUGGLE PROGRESSING (Received Oct. 2, 1 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 1 The German High Command, in a statement quoted by the Berlin radio, states: A defensive battle in the area of the Lorraine frontier and before the Belfort gap is progressing at full blast. The Americans in the past few days have launched unremitting attacks, supported by massed artillery, against the wooded regions south-east’ of Luneville. A particularly grim struggle is progressing on a 37-mile front in the foothills of the western Vosges. Our counterattacks have pinned down the enemy considerably and reduced the ground from which he hoped to attack Belfort.

The German news agency commentator, Plato, said: As a result of the most recent fighting we lost Ramber Villers. The American Third and Seventh Armies’ full-scale attacks are continuing with mounting ferocity. The Canadians today reached the Belgian-Dutch frontier south-west of Tilburg, says Reuter’s correspondent with the First Canadian Army. The Canadians are poised for entry into Holland, apparently against diminishing German resistance. Other Canadian units driving to the border farther west captured Brecht.
